| YouTube 2.1 update now available for Android 2.2 smartphones Posted: 09 Dec 2010 05:02 AM PST Google has announced its latest YouTube client for Android 2.2 "Froyo" powered smartphones. The app, which was rebuilt from the ground up to mirror the YouTube desktop experience, offers in-page playback. That allows you to browse related videos or flag videos without stopping the one currently playing. You can also post comments or access the list of videos available from your subscriptions. Google also says it now offers a new full-screen user interface which makes it easier to seek within the video. YouTube 2.1 is free in the Android Market and works only with Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 smartphones. Read the full story here. |
| Google activating 300,000 Android smartphones daily Posted: 09 Dec 2010 04:51 AM PST Last night Google's vice president of engineering, Andy Rubin, posted on Twitter noting that Google now activates more than 300,000 Android smartphones every day. That's up from the 200,000 activations per day figure that Google announced in August. Rubin's figures put to rest some speculation that Android's growth was plateauing, after some recent figures pegged Android activations at 1.5 million devices per week (214,000 daily). While it's unclear what Apple's iPhone activations currently are, in October Steve Jobs said Apple activated an average of 270,000 iOS devices per day. Read the full story here. |
| Gowalla 3 for iPhone offers Facebook, Foursquare support Posted: 08 Dec 2010 01:12 PM PST Today Gowalla announced that its latest client, Gowalla 3, is now available for the iPhone. Gowalla 3 allows users to check in on Facebook Places or Foursquare and even update Twitter or Tumblr.Gowalla 3 has a new and faster check-in user interface, a new Bookmarks feature for remembering favorite spots, and a Notes feature for adding notes for friends or yourself at any location. | Sprint announces international 4G roaming in Jamaica, Taiwan Posted: 08 Dec 2010 11:58 AM PST Today Sprint announced that it has signed international 4G roaming agreements with Digicel in Jamaica and Global Mobile in Taiwan so that Sprint 4G customers can access 4G networks while traveling abroad. Those with Sprint 4G plans and Sprint SmartView Connection Manager will be able to automatically detect the networks and roam with an unlimited 24 hour Daypass. Read the full story here. |
| Yahoo Local beta launches for iPhone, Android Posted: 08 Dec 2010 11:50 AM PST Today Yahoo announced its new Yahoo Local product is available for the iPhone and Android smartphones in beta form. Yahoo Local provides users with nearby information, news, deals, and events on their smartphones and computers. | Angry Birds hits 42 million downloads, sequel in the works Posted: 08 Dec 2010 09:04 AM PST According to Rovio's CEO, Mikael Hed, the popular Angry Birds mobile game has been downloaded 42 million times across multiple mobile platforms including the iPhone, Symbian, and Android. There were 12 million paid downloads (presumably on iOS) and 30 million ad-supported downloads. Hed said his company makes more than $1 million per month from advertising alone through its free Android app, and that Rovio chose to make the app free due to pricing inconsistencies on the international Android Market. Reportedly, Angry Birds 2 is in the works, and Rovio plans to bring the title to console systems such as the Wii, Xbox 360, and the PS3. Read the full story here. |
| Netflix inks deal with Disney-ABC Television for streaming content Posted: 08 Dec 2010 07:57 AM PST Today Netflix announced a new licensing agreement with Disney-ABC Television group, which will allow its subscribers to access and stream episodes from ABC, the Disney Channel, and ABC Family. That will include every episode of "Lost" and other popular TV shows such as "Ugly Betty," and "Grey's Anatomy." Users will also be able to stream Disney Channel and ABC Family movies. Netflix Streaming is available on a host of mobile devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Windows Phone 7 devices. It's unclear when the full library will be available, but Netflix said shows will generally be available no earlier than 15 days of their initial telecast. Read the full story here. |
| Skype adds support for Nokia C7, E5, and N8 Posted: 08 Dec 2010 07:42 AM PST Today Skype announced that it has added support for Nokia's latest Symbian phones including the N8, C7, and E5. The software includes Skype's high quality audio codec, SILK, which it says will make calls crystal clear. Skype for Symbian allows for free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM over 3G and Wi-Fi. | Symbian^3 YouTube mobile client updated Posted: 08 Dec 2010 06:30 AM PST Google has reportedly updated its Symbian^3 YouTube mobile client to work better with Symbian^3, S60 5th edition, and S60 3rd edition. The client should allow for higher quality video streams when available, the ability to sign-in to your YouTube account, access favorites, and more.
