Google envisions Star Trek future with speech synthesis firm purchase

Today Google announced that it has acquired Phonetic Arts, a synthetic speech company. Phonetic Arts works on creating "natural computer speech" from samples of recorded voice clips. It could be used in Google's products that speak to users, such as its Google Translation software and its navigation instructions that are built into its Google Navigation product on Android smartphones. "We are excited about their technology, and while we don't have plans to share yet, we're confident that together we'll move a little faster towards [a] Star Trek future," Mike Cohen, manager of Google's speech technology team said, referring to the way Star Trek characters were able to speak freely with their computers. Details on the price of the acquisition were not announced.

Samsung: 3 million Galaxy S Android smartphones shipped in U.S.

Today Samsung announced that it has shipped 3 million of its Android powered Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the United States. Galaxy S phones are available on the big four carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint), as well as some smaller carriers.

Chrome to WP7 browser plugin now available

A new Google Chrome browser plugin called Chrome to WP7 is now available. The plugin was developed by Dave Amenta and allows users to send links and text from the Chrome browser directly to their Windows phone 7 powered smartphone. The Chrome to WP7 application is also now available in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. Anything pushed to the phone will show up as a "toast" notifications and lists your most recent text and shared links. Once opened in WP7, you'll have the option to email or open the text or link.

Beezz Twitter app to offer Live Tile notifications on WP7

According to Boy Genius Report, the Beezz Twitter application on Windows Phone 7 will begin offering Live Tile notifications either later today or tomorrow. The current native Twitter application does not offer live tile notifications if someone sends a reply or a direct message, so this could be useful for Windows Phone 7 Twitter users out there.

LG to build phones using more eco-friendly materials by 2012

Today LG announced that it will move to use the more environment friendly eco-magnesium metals in its products by 2012. LG says the decision will reduce greenhouse gas emission by a factor of approximately 24,000 during the die casting process without affecting the final product. Eco-magnesium creates very little greenhouse gas during its production and its use in mobile phones should reduce carbon dioxide emissions by four kilograms for every LG handset LG makes.

U.S. Cellular intros three new prepaid plans

U.S. Cellular has announced that it is now offering three new prepaid monthly plans that range in price from $29 to $49.The $29 prepaid plan includes 200 minutes with unlimited text messaging. The $39 prepaid plan includes 400 minutes, unlimited text, and 5GB of data for web browsing. The $49 prepaid plan offers 1,000 minutes as well as unlimited text messaging.
