Sprint "strongly recommends" users avoid leaked Epic 4G Android 2.2 Froyo build

Over the weekend an Android 2.2 "Froyo" software release was leaked for the Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint. Sprint has since responded to the leak recommending that users refrain from installing the software on their Epic 4G phones. "Over the weekend, some users were able to access and download a test build (DK28) for the Samsung Epic from some 3rd party developer sites. Unfortunately, this is not approved software for Sprint production devices and we strongly recommend that users refrain from loading it," a Sprint Forums administrator said. Sprint is working on a Froyo update and hopes to have it out in the "very near future."

Verizon Wireless pushing out new Motorola DROID operating system update

Carphone Warehouse announces pricing, availability of Google Nexus S

Today Google announced the Nexus S, a smartphone built by Samsung that is the first to run Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. The Nexus S features a curved 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display, a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, a 5MP camera/camcorder, and a second VGA front-facing camera for video chats. The Nexus S also supports near field communications (NFC) technology. It will be available in the UK for Vodafone through Carphone Warehouse starting on December 20. It will retail unlocked for BPS549.95. ($864)

Best Buy to sell Google Nexus S for $199 with T-Mobile contract, $529 unlocked

Today Best Buy announced that it will exclusively sell the Google Nexus S, made by Samsung, for $199 with a new 2-year T-Mobile contract. Best Buy will also sell the device unlocked for $529. The Nexus S will be available in all Best Buy retail stores, 157 Best Buy Mobile stores, and on Best Buy's website "after December 16." The Nexus S is the first phone to run Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and it offers a 4-inch Super AMOLED Contour display, NFC support, a 1GHz processor, 16GB of storage, and more.

Google eBookstore launches for Android, iOS, other mobile devices

Today Google announced the debut of its Google eBookstore which will allow readers to access more than three million eBook titles for reading. Google says thousands of them are for sale, too. In tandem with the eBookstore launch, Google released e-reader apps for both Android and iOS devices.

Nexus One getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in coming weeks

According to Boy Genius Report, Google is currently pushing an over-the-air update out to the Nexus One with Android 2.3 Gingerbread in tow. A Google spokesperson also confirmed with us that the update will be rolling out in the coming weeks. "[Android] 2.3 will be rolling out to N1's in the coming weeks. It is not currently rolling out to them, though," the spokesperson said. Gingerbread offers a tweaked user interface, multi-touch keyboard, support for VoIP calling, and more. Without an near field communications (NFC) chip, however, the Nexus One won't be able to feature Gingerbread's near field communications support. Update: it's not rolling out yet but still will be pushed out in the next few weeks.

Pandora: No plans for Windows Phone 7 app

Pandora, the company behind the popular internet radio application available on BlackBerry, Android, and iOS, has said via Twitter that there are no plans for a Windows Phone 7 application. That seems a bit odd to us considering that Pandora is available on most other smartphone platforms and was listed as a Microsoft Windows Phone 7 launch partner, according to WPCentral. There could be confusion on Pandora's Twitter account team, as another Tweet said "I'm not sure if/when we'll be available for Win7 phones," which could suggest Pandora's Twitter team isn't on the same page as its developers.

Sprint details plan to enhance and consolidate network

Today Sprint announced its "Network Vision" plan to improve its network and consolidate its data and voice networks by using new multimode base stations. Sprint also said it will begin to phase out its iDEN network in 2013 and that it will use re-purposed 800MHz spectrum for new CDMA service, which it will use for its next-gen push-to-talk services.

Consumer Reports ranks AT&T as worst U.S. wireless carrier

A new report from Consumer Reports has found that AT&T ranks the lowest in the United States among wireless carriers for customer support and service. AT&T was also ranked lowest by Consumer Reports readers.
