Windows Phone 7.5 now required to access the Windows Phone Marketplace Posted: 23 May 2012 05:02 AM PDT Yesterday, Microsoft flipped the switch to make it mandatory for a device to have Windows Phone 7.5 Mango or later in order to access apps and games in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The company announced last month that it would be making this change, and it says that it is necessary to maintain certain levels of security and performance in the Marketplace as it continues to grow. The change affects both the web and phone versions of the Marketplace. Users that have not yet upgraded to Windows Phone 7.5 from Windows Phone 7 are encouraged to do so now. Most HTC devices to get Android 4.0 ICS by summer's end Posted: 22 May 2012 12:14 PM PDT HTC has posted a new schedule for the devices it plans to upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this year, and with the exception of the DROID Incredible 2, it seems that most devices will have the newer operating system by the end of this summer. Apple hangs on to more than 60 percent of the tablet market in Q1 2012 Posted: 22 May 2012 11:30 AM PDT A new report from NPD DisplaySearch says that Apple continues to dominate the tablet market. Samsung Galaxy S III won't support DC-HSPA in the UK Posted: 22 May 2012 08:09 AM PDT Samsung has confirmed to CNET that the upcoming Galaxy S III smartphone will not support DC-HSPA networks in the UK. {DC-HSPA} offers download speeds of up to 42Mbps, and is twice as fast as HSPA+. The service is currently offered by O2 and is supported by the Nokia Lumia 900 and the new Apple iPad. Samsung did note that in other markets, the Galaxy S III would have support for faster HSPA and LTE networks. The Galaxy S III is due to be available in the UK starting on May 30. U.S. Cellular launches customized Amazon Appstore for its Android users Posted: 22 May 2012 07:53 AM PDT U.S. Cellular has become the first and only carrier to date to offer a customized app menu in the Amazon Appstore for Android for its customers. Similar to the carrier portals in the Google Play Store, the U.S. Cellular menu in the Amazon Appstore offers a curated menu of apps for a variety of purposes as chosen by the carrier. Verizon launches viewdini mobile video app for 4G Android smartphones, tablets Posted: 22 May 2012 07:23 AM PDT Verizon Wireless has announced a new app for its 4G LTE Android smartphones and tablets that aggregates video content from a variety of sources. Called viewdini, the app allows users to search for and watch videos from Comcast Xfinity, Hulu Plus, mSpot, and Netflix, with other sources like Verizon FiOS to be added in the future. The app will inform users if a service offers mobile video streaming and how much it costs. Viewdini is expected to be available for free in the Google Play Store later this month. Verizon Jetpack 890L mobile hotspot device arrives May 24 for $19.99 Posted: 22 May 2012 06:57 AM PDT Verizon Wireless has announced that the Jetpack 890L mobile hotspot device will be available for purchase in stores and online starting on May 24. The Jetpack 890L is built by Chinese manufacturer ZTE and features support for up to 10 simultaneously-connected devices and offers users an OLED information display. It runs on Verizon's 4G LTE network and also supports the carrier's legacy 3G CDMA network. The Jetpack 890L is also global-ready, so it can be used in over 205 countries around the world. Google finalizes $12.5 billion Motorola Mobility acquisition Posted: 22 May 2012 06:12 AM PDT Following the approval of the Chinese government, Google has finalized its acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Google initially announced its intent to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion back in August of last year, and it has been going through various regulatory proceedings for the buy since then. Hulu Plus for iOS updated with Retina Display support, better AirPlay mirroring Posted: 22 May 2012 06:01 AM PDT Hulu Plus for iOS has been updated to version 2.5, and with the update comes support for the Retina Display on the new iPad and improved AirPlay mirroring functions. The improved AirPlay functions will now let users send 16:9 video streams to an Apple TV, as opposed to the 4:3 format that was used in earlier versions of the app. The iPad version of the app has also gained a revised user interface. Sprint updates mobile hotspot and tethering plan options Posted: 22 May 2012 05:36 AM PDT Sprint has changed the mobile hotspot and tethering plan options that are available to its smartphone and tablet users. The new options available are a 2GB plan for $20 per month, or a 6GB plan for $50 per month, both of which are in addition to a standard rate plan. Those that go over their allotments will have to pay $0.05 per MB in overage fees. Prior to these changes, Sprint offered a 5GB mobile hotspot plan for $30 per month. The new plans took effect on May 18, though customers that still have the 5GB plan are able to continue using it until they cancel service. The carrier also says that it will now notify users when they reach 75, 90, and 100 percent of their mobile hotspot data allotments. Read the full story here. |
