Pandora surpasses 150 million users, is second most downloaded iOS app

Internet music service Pandora has passed the 150 million users mark, according to CEO Joe Kennedy, who made the comment at CTIA this week in New Orleans. Kennedy also said that Pandora is the second most downloaded app from Apple's App Store. Pandora released a dedicated iPad app last week. Pandora is available for free from the iTunes App Store.

Isis Mobile Wallet app to support American Express cards at launch

Isis, the mobile payment joint venture between AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile, won't be launching until later this year, but that hasn't stopped it from signing up partners to be ready for when it does launch. Today, the firm announced that it will support American Express consumer, small business, and Serve cards in its Mobile Wallet app. American Express customers will be able to pay for goods and services through the Isis Mobile Wallet app by tapping their phone on a point of sale terminal and then have the charges billed to their AmEx cards. AmEx and Isis agreed to work together last year, but today's announcement is specifically for support in the mobile app. Isis is expected to launch in Salt Lake City and Austin later this year, though an exact date has not yet been announced.

Video: Hands-on with the LG Lucid for Verizon Wireless

The LG Lucid is a 4G LTE smartphone for Verizon Wireless that comes from the same family of phones as the Connect 4G for MetroPCS and the Viper 4G LTE for Sprint. It sports a 4-inch, WVGA NOVA display and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The Lucid runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with LG's custom user interface. Verizon Wireless is offering the Lucid for $79.99 with a new two-year contract now.

FTC's digging into Facebook, Instagram deal may delay completion

Facebook rocked the tech world when it announced plans to buy photo-sharing mobile app Instagram to the tune of $1 billion last month, but it also looks like the activity between the companies has caught the eye of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. According to The Financial Times, the FTC is launching an investigation into the proposed purchase, and the closure of the deal could be delayed because of it.

T-Mobile USA CEO turns up nose at Verizon's 700MHz spectrum sale offer

Today T-Mobile USA's CEO, Philipp Humm, turned up his nose at Verizon Wireless' offer to sell two blocks of 700MHz spectrum as incentive for the FCC to approve Verizon's hoped-for purchase of new spectrum from cable companies.

The LG Viper 4G LTE is one of the first LTE smartphones for Sprint. Similar to the Connect 4G for MetroPCS, the Viper sports a 4-inch WVGA resolution NOVA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM. It has a 5 megapixel camera and silver color scheme.

Samsung: PenTile AMOLED displays last longer, that's why we use them

Samsung announced its new Galaxy S III smartphone to great fanfare last week, though some observers weren't terribly happy with one particular feature: the 4.8-inch 720p Super AMOLED display uses a PenTile subpixel layout instead of the generally more favorable RGB layout. At CTIA 2012, we spoke to Samsung about its choice to use PenTile layouts in a large number of its displays, and the answer really comes down to durability and longevity.

Judge refuses to rule on fair use in Google, Oracle battle over Java

Judge William Alsup, who is presiding over the ongoing court battle between Oracle and Google has declined to make a judgement in Oracle's favor that Google's copying of the structure of Oracle's Java API went beyond "fair use." A jury had failed to determine whether fair use had been exceeded or not, and returned a partial verdict with that question left unanswered. The judge has also yet to rule on Google's demand for a mistrial.

Evernote launches separate Yinxiang Biji service in China

As expected, Evernote has launched a new, separate Evernote-like service in China. Called Yinxiang Biji, the new service works with servers located in China and is supported by local staff. Yinxiang Biji offers most of the features of the original Evernote note-keeping application, but currently lacks proper social integration with Chinese social networks. Yinxiang Biji also supports payments in local Chinese currency, which Evernote hopes will make it a better source of premium subscriptions than the original Evernote service in China has been. The company acknowledges that Evernote has never performed well from inside China, but says Yinxiang Biji takes care of that issue.

T-Mobile UK has informed us that it, too, will carry the newly announced Research In Motion BlackBerry Curve 9320. The new 9320 has already been confirmed for Orange, Three, and Vodafone in the UK. T-Mobile UK will offer the BlackBerry 7.1 smartphone for free on a 15.50 GBP, 24 month plan or for 149.99 GBP on pay as you go.

Nokia Lumia 900 now available for purchase in the UK

Nokia's HSPA+ version of its Lumia 900 smartphone that was announced at MWC 2012 this year is now available for purchase in the UK. The Lumia 900 features a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display, a polycarbonate unibody, and Windows Phone 7.5. The Lumia 900 hitting the UK features a newer version of Windows Phone than its Yankee counterpart, and it includes the Tango features that were revealed in March. Interested buyers in the UK can pick up the white version of the Lumia 900 from Phones4U now, while Nokia says that wider availability of the phone will come tomorrow.

Samsung Galaxy Note owners reporting Android 4.0 ICS update arrival

Samsung has yet to make an official announcement on the matter, but some owners of its Galaxy Note in Europe are reporting that the promised update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is now available to install. The update clocks in at almost 319MB, according to the reports, and includes new apps that work with the Note's S Pen input device in addition to Android 4.0. Some users have to go through Samsung's KIES desktop software to complete the upgrade, while others appear to be able to get it over-the-air. Consequently, it may not be available to everyone until Samsung makes it official. Unfortunately, we have no idea when the update will be available for AT&T's version of the Galaxy Note here in the U.S., but the carrier did have some Galaxy Notes on hand running the new software at CTIA 2012 this week.

Samsung buys cloud media service mSpot

Samsung Electronics has announced that it is acquiring mSpot, a cloud-based music and media service. California-based mSpot allows users to upload their music to mSpot's servers where it can then be accessed from multiple devices, working much the way that Google's Play Music and Apple's iCloud operate.

T-Mobile loses more contract customers, but strengthens prepaid, wholesale base in Q1 2012

T-Mobile has had it rough for the past few quarters, continually losing customers and ground against its competitors. Q1 2012 appears to have been a little different for the carrier, however, as gains in its prepaid and wholesale business were able to offset the losses it saw from its regular contract customer base.
