RIM adds NFC pairing to its BlackBerry Music Gateway peripheral

RIM has unveiled a new version of its BlackBerry Music Gateway peripheral that lets users stream music from their BlackBerry handset to an external audio system. The new version still uses Bluetooth technology to handle the media streaming, but it allows owners of NFC-equipped BlackBerry smartphones to just tap their device on the Music Gateway to initiate pairing. The NFC pairing features are similar to what Nokia offers in a number of its Bluetooth accessories. The new version of the BlackBerry Music Gateway is due to arrive in June and will cost $49.99.

Verizon Wireless outs new smartphone, mobile hotspot prepaid plans

Verizon Wireless has announced new prepaid plans for smartphones and mobile hotspot devices. The new prepaid smartphone plan offers unlimited talk and text services and 1GB of data for $80 per month. It can be used with the Samsung Illusion smartphone. The new prepaid mobile hotspot plans offer 250MB of data for $15 per week, 3GB of data for $60 per month, or 10GB of data for $90 per month. These plans can be used with the Verizon Jetpack MiFi 4510L mobile hotspot, which sells for $129.99. The new plans are due to be available starting tomorrow, May 1.

Angry Birds Space hits 50 million downloads, claims "fastest growing mobile game" title

Rovio has announced that its Angry Birds Space game has hit 50 million downloads in a span of 35 days, which makes it the fastest growing mobile game ever. The game has broken all of Rovio's already impressive download records, and is available for iOS, Android, and the BlackBerry PlayBook. Before hitting this milestone, Angry Birds Space reached 10 million downloads in the initial three days after it was launched.

U.S. Cellular, Alltel join forces to offer prepaid services in Walmart stores

U.S. Cellular and Alltel have announced U Prepaid, a new no contract service that will be available in almost 500 Walmart stores across 18 states. The new service is said to offer "simplified, easy-to-understand service plan choices." U Prepaid will run on either U.S. Cellular's network or Alltel's network, depending on region. Four devices have been announced to go along with the launch of U Prepaid, including the Samsung Repp smartphone, Samsung Chrono, LG Attune/Exchange, and LG Saber. The plans will offer data and text package options in addition to voice and can work nationwide, but other details, like cost, have yet to be announced. U Prepaid is expected to launch in May.

LG has announced the new LG Cloud service, its own entrant into the increasingly-crowded cloud services market. Set to go live on May 1, LG Cloud allows users to stream content between their smartphone, television, and PC.

Skype 4.0 for iOS gets UI tweaks, performance enhancements

Skype has released version 4.0 of its app for the iOS platform, and with this new version comes a number of performance enhancements and usability improvements. Skype has added the ability to reposition a user's video preview, and has addressed bugs that hampered stability. Now, should the app unexpectedly close, it will automatically restart. Additionally, the contacts and messaging sections of the app have received a makeover. Skype for iOS is free and works with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, and iPod touch.

Nokia's effort to sell Vertu moves to advanced talks says Financial Times

The Financial Times is reporting that Nokia's efforts to offload its luxury Vertu brand have moved into advanced talks with a private equity group, Permira. It was reported late last year that Nokia had signed on Goldman Sachs to oversee the sale of Vertu, but Nokia has not yet admitted that Vertu is up for sale.

LightSquared's Falcone to step down in face of company debt

LightSquared, the once-ambitious 4G LTE network provider that was shot down by the Federal Communications Commission earlier this year, has had a rough go of it for the past few months. Now facing mounting debt and possible bankruptcy, LightSquared's public face, Philip Falcone, founder of Harbinger Capital Management LLC, the hedge fund that launched LightSquared, has decided to step away from the company to make it easier for LightSquared to sort out its financial woes.
