Strategy Analytics has released a report claiming that 20 percent of mobile processors sold in 2011 were dual-core in nature, with Samsung leading the charge. The firm predicts that dual-core processors will continue to see strong growth throughout 2012 and 2013.

RIM: Current BlackBerry 7 devices will not be upgraded to BlackBerry 10

Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins revealed during a press conference today that current BlackBerry 7 smartphones would not be upgraded to the new BlackBerry 10 platform when it launches later this year. Additionally, BlackBerry 7 apps will not necessarily work with BlackBerry 10, and vice-versa. RIM did say that it may port some older BlackBerry 7 apps to the new platform, and it is committing to support BlackBerry 7.1 for "a while." RIM made a similar break last year when it revealed that older BlackBerry 6 devices would not see upgrades to BlackBerry 7. The path RIM is taking with BlackBerry 10 is also very similar to the moves Microsoft and Palm made when they introduced their next-generation mobile platforms.

4G BlackBerry PlayBook coming this year, claims RIM CEO

RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins, has confirmed that a 4G version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will arrive later this year. Speaking at a press conference, Heins did not offer many details about the device or when it would exactly be available. RIM has talked about a PlayBook with cellular capabilities ever since the tablet was launched last spring, but only Wi-Fi models have been available to date. It is generally assumed that a 4G version will feature support for LTE networks, not WiMAX or other 4G technologies.

Motorola RAZR MAXX continues European tour, hits Scandinavia this month

Motorola is planning to launch the RAZR MAXX smartphone, complete with its super long stamina, in Scandinavia this month. Already announced for the UK, the RAZR MAXX is now due to hit Denmark, Sweden, and Norway as well. The RAZR MAXX has been available in the U.S. as the DROID RAZR MAXX on Verizon Wireless since late last year. It features a 4.3-inch qHD resolution display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It is expected to be available in various European countries by the middle of the month. An upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is promised to arrive at a later date.

Nokia files suit against RIM, HTC, ViewSonic over alleged patent infringements

Nokia has filed a lawsuit against RIM, HTC, and ViewSonic with the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. claiming that the companies have infringed upon Nokia's patents. The Finnish company names 45 patents in the lawsuit, which cover technologies such as "dual function antennas, power management and multimode radios" and things that "enhance software features including application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device." Nokia says that it already licenses its technology to over 40 companies, but it notes that it "had to file these actions to end the unauthorized use of our proprietary innovations and technologies, which have not been widely licensed." The lawsuit was also filed in Germany.

Tizen open source smartphone OS reaches version 1.0

Tizen, the open-source smartphone OS project that features support from Intel, Panasonic, Samsung, and various carriers, has reached version 1.0 status. The Tizen 1.0 Larkspur edition is the first non-beta release of the platform, and it features improved connectivity and web browsing abilities. Developers can download the source code and SDK to create apps for the platform now. Tizen's developers say that there will be frequent updates for the platform released over the coming weeks.

Nokia renews partnership with Carl Zeiss for smartphone imaging technology

Nokia has announced that it is extending its partnership with optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss, which ensures that Zeiss will continue to produce lenses and imaging technology for future Nokia smartphones. Nokia has used Carl Zeiss optics and imaging technologies in its smartphone cameras since 2005. Zeiss has been featured in some of the best camera phones ever produced, including the Nokia N8 and 808 PureView. Nokia says that its partnership with Carl Zeiss will result in more innovations with its PureView technologies and other smartphone imaging systems.

Nokia 808 PureView with 41 megapixel camera to hit Russia, India this month

Nokia has announced that its 808 PureView Symbian smartphone will hit retail shelves in Russia and India later this month. The 808 PureView's claim to fame is its 41 megapixel camera that features Carl Zeiss optics and the ability to zoom in on a subject after a picture is taken without any loss of quality. It also features Nokia's Rich Recording technology that can capture audio with CD-like quality. The 808 PureView runs the latest version of Nokia's Belle operating system. Russia and India will the be the first markets to get the new phone, though Nokia has not announced plans for other markets.
