FEMA launches Android app just in time for Hurricane Irene

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has just launched its Android app complete with information as to what to during a natural disaster. The agency has had a mobile website for some time, but the app will allow users to access the crucial information should cellular networks prove unreliable during an emergency.

FCC restarts investigation into AT&T purchase of T-Mobile

The Federal Communications Commission has announced that it will restart its investigation into the purchase of T-Mobile by AT&T because AT&T has now supplied the FCC with the information that it recently requested. The review period of 180 days has been reset, 83 days into the FCC's initial review.

Samsung to unveil Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet with LTE next week too

In addition to the previously mentioned upgrade to the Galaxy S II, complete with LTE, it seems that Samsung will be rolling out the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet with LTE next week as well. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 was originally announced way back at CTIA earlier this spring, but there has been nary a peep about it from Samsung since then.

ViewSonic ViewPad 7x 7-inch Honeycomb tablet to arrive in September

ViewSonic's 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet, the ViewPad 7x, has finally been given an expected time of release and a price ahead of the IFA technology trade show scheduled for next week in Germany. ViewSonic will be parading the new tablet around during the show, and it expects it to hit shelves in late September for 349 EUR (US$501). The ViewPad 7x sports a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and that 7-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screen.

Court rules Verizon Wireless customers must arbitrate individually

Earlier this week, a federal appeals court reversed a ruling from last year that allowed Verizon Wireless customers to band together in class action lawsuits to fight what they consider fraudulent charges from the carrier. Customers will have to fight their battles against the carrier with individual arbitration instead.

According to SammyHub, Samsung will trot out a new, upgraded version of the Galaxy S II smartphone, complete with 4G LTE capabilities, at the IFA technology trade show next week in Germany. The new phone features a number of upgraded specs compared to Samsung's current Galaxy S II.

Samsung Galaxy W to be available from Three UK next month

According to Three UK's "Coming Soon" page, the recently-announced Samsung Galaxy W smartphone will be gracing the carrier's lineup come September. The Galaxy W is arguably the most interesting of the four new smartphones that Samsung introduced this week, and it sports a 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) display, a 1.4GHz single-core processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung's TouchWiz interface. While pricing and an exact release date are not yet available, interested buyers can register for updates directly from Three at its website now.
