HP TouchPad hitting the bargain bin, shows up on Woot already

There are two things to consider when a product shows up on the daily-deal site Woot.com. One, is that buyers can grab a product for considerably less than it is normally priced at in stores. The other, is that the product probably isn't selling well in stores and the manufacturer is using Woot to dump off excess stock. Depending on your perspective, the appearance of the HP TouchPad on Woot today for 25 percent less than its launch price from only a month ago could be a good thing, or could be a death knell for the just-released tablet.

Google reacts to Microsoft's claims: 'Nice try, we didn't fall for it'

In yet another exchanging of barbs, Google has responded to Microsoft's claims that Microsoft reached out to Google to bid jointly on the Novell patents and that Google denied Microsoft. Google puts it succinctly, saying "We didn't fall for it."

Android has 40 percent of U.S. smartphone market despite patent troubles

Google made quite a stink this week about the patent situation in the U.S. and what it feels are anti-competitive practices by other players in the smartphone industry. Google shouldn't have too much to complain about, though, as comScore's latest report on the smartphone market places Android in the pole position, with a nearly 15 point lead over its nearest rival - Apple.

T-Mobile rolls out Direct Carrier Billing for digital content

T-Mobile has announced a new initiative this week that will allow users to charge digital goods and services right to their mobile phone bill. Called Direct Carrier Billing, the service is designed to make it easier for users since they will not have to enter their credit card information when making a purchase with their phones.

LightSquared signs up another wholesale network customer

LightSquared has announced another wholesale network agreement for its yet-to-be-deployed 4G LTE network that is due to arrive next year. The new deal with PowerNet Global will have LightSquared providing white-label network services that will be branded under PowerNet's name. The agreement is multi-year, but exact terms were not disclosed. LightSquared has yet to get final approval from the Federal Communications Commission for its LTE network, due to various interference issues with GPS services. LightSquared also recently signed an agreement to have Sprint help LightSquared build its network in exchange for cash and LTE services.

The LG Thrill 4G is AT&T's version of the LG Optimus 3D that debuted to European markets a little while back. It is physically the same as its European cousin, and features a 4.3-inch, glasses-free 3D display, dual 5 megapixel cameras for 3D still and video capture, and a dual-core 1GHz processor with dual-channel memory.

Clearwire to pick up LTE, won't be dropping WiMAX

On Wednesday Clearwire announced its plans to use Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology as part of its 4G network strategy going forward. The network provider made sure to point out that it will not be dropping WiMAX services just yet though, as it remains committed to servicing its existing customers.

HTC will offer web tool to unlock bootloaders, void warranties

Earlier this year, HTC promised that it would be unlocking bootloaders for its smartphones, which have been recently shipping with locked bootloaders, preventing tinkerers from easily loading their own software onto the smartphones. It was not known however, how HTC would go about unlocking the bootloaders on phones that have already been on the market, such as the Sensation and EVO 3D. In light of this, HTC has announced a web tool that will do the job for you.

Microsoft retaliates against Google's blog post with smoking gun email

Google's Chief Legal Counsel, David Drummond, expressed the company's position on software patents and the endless litigation that surrounds them in a post on the company's official blog yesterday, and he called out Microsoft and Apple for what Google feels are anti-competitive practices when purchasing patent suites. Microsoft is having none of it, though, as the company has produced proof that it approached Google to see if it would like to join Microsoft in a bid on the Novell patents, but was turned down.
