AT&T consolidating messaging plans, leaving unlimited as only option

According to Engadget, AT&T is restructuring its text messaging plans this coming Sunday, and it is consolidating its two plans into one. Or, more accurately, it is killing its lower cost option and only offering the more expensive unlimited plan going forward.

MetroPCS has partnered up with Rhapsody to offer a new benefit to its customers who are on the carrier's $60 per month unlimited plan: the full Rhapsody Unlimited streaming music service is offered to customers at no extra charge.

Sprint users consume the most wireless data

Having truly unlimited data is nice, and it seems that Sprint users are well aware of that, as a new study shows that Sprint customers use the most data of all. The average data used per month by a Sprint smartphone customer was nearly twice that of second place AT&T.

Verizon turns on more 4G LTE markets tomorrow, will cover half the U.S.

Verizon Wireless has announced that the latest expansion to its LTE network, which happens tomorrow, will put LTE coverage in the range of half of the U.S. population. Fifteen new markets will get LTE service tomorrow, and another 10 existing markets will see their coverage expanded. The new markets include Tucson, Ariz.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Frederick, Md.; Worcester, Mass.; Albany, Ithaca, and Syracuse, N.Y.; Altoona and Johnstown, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Provo, Utah. The expanded markets are Washington, D.C.; Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; Boston, Mass.; Lansing, Mich.; New York, N.Y.; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; and Salt Lake City-Ogden, Utah. With this expansion, 160 million Americans will be able to kill their battery on Verizon's LTE network.

Video: BlackBerry Torch 9810 (AT&T) tour - part 2 of 2

Part 2 of our video tour of the BlackBerry Torch 9810 by Research In Motion, the second member of the Torch family of smartphones to be released on AT&T that follows in the footsteps of last year's initial 9800 model. The new 9810 features twice the processing power, four times the resolution (VGA), and 50 percent more RAM than the original. There's also 8GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot for expansion. While it won't likely satisfy Android and iPhone users, the newest Torch's BlackBerry OS 7 system will probably suit BlackBerry fans just fine.

Google Search for iPhone updated with easier navigation

Google has updated its Search app for the iPhone with a refreshed user interface and easier navigation. Users can now switch between the various Google search services via a button that is found to the left of the search box. Google has improved its help pages and removed alerts for the Calendar. The company also says there are the usual bug fixes and performance improvements with this update. The Google Search app is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Google Reader for Android updated with new look, tablet support

The app updates keep coming today, as the Google Reader app for Android has been updated too. The Reader app has been given a visual refresh that brings it more in-line with recent products from the search company, such as Google+. It has also been optimized with better support for tablets.

Bing for Android updated with Windows Phone looks

Microsoft's Bing app for Android smartphones has received an update that brings a lot of the Metro design elements seen in the Windows Phone platform to the app. It doesn't seem like there are any new features to speak of, but the whole experience does look a lot better.

Sprint Phone Connect provides unlimited home phone service for $20 per month

Sprint has announced a new service for homes and businesses that lets users use their home phone to place calls over Sprint's wireless network. Users plug their home phones into the Sprint Phone Connect terminal to connect them to the wireless network.

New Photovine app for iPhone tells stories with pictures

The latest project to come out of Google's Slide skunkworks team, which has previously released the Disco messaging app and PoolParty photo app, is the Photovine app for the iPhone. Photovine is an image sharing app that attempts to connect photos of a similar theme together to tell a story.

Samsung concerned about being competitive after Google, Motorola deal

Samsung may have officially announced its approval of Google's proposed purchase of Motorola, but behind closed doors the company may have a different outlook on the purchase. According to reports, the chairman of Samsung Electronics, Lee Kun-hee, held an emergency with senior staff warning that Samsung was behind its competition in software offerings, such as dedicated smartphone operating systems.

Apple faces lawsuit from 26,000 South Koreans

Following the recent court victories over Apple that have been given to individual users in South Korea, Apple is now facing a class action suit in the country over its location data practices on the iPhone. More than 26,000 South Korean residents have joined the case, each demanding 1 million KRW (US$933) in compensation.

Best Buy still has 90 percent of its initial HP TouchPad tablet stock

The HP TouchPad has had a bit of a rocky ride since its launch back at the beginning of July, with lukewarm reviews and a number of price cuts designed to trigger sales of the tablet. Despite the drop in price, it seems that HP is having quite a bit of trouble moving the TouchPad at retail, as All Things D is reporting that Best Buy is still sitting on over 90 percent of its original stock of the tablet.
