Skype for Android updated with video calling on more smartphones, tablets

Skype released an update to its Android app at the end of June that added two-way video calling and a redesigned user interface. While all phone models were able to take advantage of the new interface, only a select few were compatible with the video calling feature. Skype has now issued another update to the app that adds many more phones to the compatibility list.

Google says Android is under attack from Apple, Microsoft

The Chief Legal Officer for Google, David Drummond, outlined what Google feels is an attack on Android by competitors such as Apple, Microsoft, and Oracle in a post on Google's official blog today. Drummond claims that the massive success that Android has seen has prompted the competitors to use patents and litigation as a tool to hamper Google's growth.

France begins investigation into Apple iPhone location tracking

A little late to the party, France's Commission Nationale de L'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) has begun an investigation into the location tracking being done on Apple's iPhone that was discovered earlier this year. South Korea and the U.S. have already been investigating the issue for some time.

Malware on the rise for mobile devices

According to a new report by mobile security firm Lookout, malware for mobile devices is more prevalent than ever before, and users are much more likely to encounter it than in the past. One usually thinks of Android when they hear about mobile malware, but those using iOS devices can be just as vulnerable if they do not regularly install Apple's software updates, which studies suggest many do not.

Twitter launches HTML5 mobile site for iPad

Twitter has announced that it is rolling out a new, HTML5-powered website for access on the iPad. The social network had updated its mobile site for the iPhone and Android devices some time ago, but the iPad was stuck with the traditional desktop view of the site, which is not that usable on a mobile device.

HTC Wildfire S Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone now available from T-Mobile

The HTC Wildfire S smartphone that was announced for T-Mobile a few weeks ago is now available for purchase. The Wildfire S features Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC's Sense interface, and has a 3.2-inch, HVGA display. It has a 5 megapixel camera on the back and comes in white or black color schemes. The Wildfire S costs $79.99 with a new two-year agreement, and can be had at T-Mobile stores or online, as well as at Walmart and Sam's Club stores.

U.S. Cellular to carry BlackBerry Torch 9850

U.S. Cellular has announced that it will be carrying the recently-announced BlackBerry Torch 9850 smartphone. The Torch 9850 is the latest all-touchscreen smartphone from RIM, and features a 1.2GHz processor and BlackBerry OS 7. Pricing and exact availability have yet to be announced.

Qualcomm rebrands Snapdragon smartphone processor line

Qualcomm has announced a rebranding of its Snapdragon line of processors for smartphones and tablets. The new branding splits the Snapdragon processors into four different categories to make it easier for consumers to know each processor's capabilities.

Sprint to get BlackBerry Bold 9930, Torch 9850 this fall

Following RIM's announcement of its new BlackBerry smartphones, Sprint has made it known that it will be carrying the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 come this fall. The Bold 9930 is the successor to the Bold 9650, and is the slimmest BlackBerry smartphone to date. The Torch 9850 offers a 3.7-inch touchscreen, and both phones are powered by a 1.2GHz processor and run BlackBerry OS 7. Sprint says pricing and exact availability will be provided closer to launch.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 TouchWiz update arrives August 5

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet won't have to wait too much longer for the TouchWiz user interface update, as Samsung has announced that it will be available to download and install beginning on August 5. The update brings a refreshed user interface, along with mini-apps in the task bar at the bottom, and the Swype on-screen keyboard. Adobe Flash Player 10.3 comes along for the ride, as well as Samsung's Media Hub service. Users will be able to install the update from the System Updates section of the Settings app.

4G LTE version of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get TouchWiz interface too

We are in NYC today getting our Wi-Fi edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 upgraded with Samsung's TouchWiz interface and we managed to get some information from Verizon Wireless about the LTE version of the tablet. The LTE version launched with stock Android 3.1 Honeycomb, and it was unknown if it would get upgraded to Samsung's interface or not.

Android app compatibility for RIM BlackBerry PlayBook pushed back to fall

Ever since the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet was released back in April, RIM has been talking about running Android apps on it with an Android emulator. The feature was even shown off briefly during RIM's BlackBerry World conference in May. However, according to sources reporting to Engadget, this feature won't be coming to the PlayBook this summer as originally promised, and will be pushed back into the fall.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9900 headed to AT&T this year in "4G" guise

AT&T has let it be known that along with "4G" versions of the just-announced BlackBerry Torch 9810 and Torch 9860, it will be carrying a "4G" version of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone at some point this year. The Bold 9900, if you recall, was announced way back in May during RIM's BlackBerry World conference, and features a 2.8-inch, VGA (480 x 640 pixel) resolution touchscreen and the traditional BlackBerry keyboard. It is powered by a 1.2GHz processor and runs RIM's new BlackBerry OS 7 with Liquid Graphics technology for a fast and responsive experience. AT&T did not announce pricing or an exact availability date.

RIM takes the Torch all-touch with BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 smartphone

Along with the successor to the original Torch, the 9810, RIM has announced new, all-touchscreen members of the Torch family, called the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860. The 9850/9860 will come in both CDMA (9850) and GSM (9860) versions, but other than network support, both have the same hardware and software specifications.
