Video: BlackBerry Torch 9810 (AT&T) tour - part 1 of 2

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 by Research In Motion is the second member of the Torch family of smartphones to be released on AT&T, following in the footsteps of last year's initial 9800 model. The new 9810 features twice the processing power, four times the resolution (VGA), and 50 percent more RAM than the original. There's also 8GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot for expansion. While it won't likely satisfy Android and iPhone users, the newest Torch's BlackBerry OS 7 system will probably suit BlackBerry fans just fine.

HP Pre 3 now available to order in Europe, headed to U.S. "soon"

In what has got to be the laziest launch for a top-tier smartphone in recent history, save for maybe the Motorola DROID 3 on Verizon Wireless, HP has made the all-new Pre 3 webOS smartphone available for purchase in Europe.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone available from T-Mobile on August 31

T-Mobile has announced that it is adding the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone from RIM to its repertoire on August 31. The new BlackBerry 7 smartphone will cost $299.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year agreement. Business customers will be able to get a jump on the little guy, as they can begin ordering the Bold 9900 today, while the average customer will have to wait until August 31 to buy it in T-Mobile stores or online.

Google Maps for Android updated with minor tweaks

Google has updated its Maps for Android app to version 5.9 today and has added a couple of minor features. The Transit Navigation feature that debuted with version 5.7 is now available to tablet users, and there are now voice and ringtone notifications for it. Also, a new Lab feature called 'Bubble Buttons' allows you to add call and navigation buttons to search results on the map. The update for Google Maps for Android can be downloaded from the Android Market now.

BestBuy offering three Android smartphones for free tomorrow

Best Buy is running a promotion in its Best Buy stores, Best Buy Mobile locations, and online tomorrow that will allow customers to pick up the Motorola ATRIX 4G, Google Nexus S 4G, or Samsung Fascinate for free. The usual two-year contract (or upgrade) is required, but if you haven't taken advantage of the numerous opportunities to get these particular phones for free in the past, Best Buy is giving you one more chance.

RIM explains lack of NFC on BlackBerry Bold 9930 smartphone

When the new BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 smartphone was announced, one of the highlight features was its NFC capabilities since it was the first BlackBerry to support NFC. The GSM version of the phone, the 9900, hit shelves in Canada this week complete with NFC capabilities in tow. The CDMA-powered 9930, however, lacks these features, despite appearing to have the hardware necessary.

Apple, Starbucks team up to give away an app a week

AT&T's LTE devices make their appearance August 21, network will catch up later

AT&T has announced that its first LTE devices will be available on August 21. The carrier has a USB modem and a mobile hotspot, both from Sierra Wireless, that can take advantage of its forthcoming LTE network. Unfortunately, said network won't be available to be used when the devices are released, and AT&T has not committed to a roll out date yet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban lifted outside of Germany

The regional court in Dusseldorf, Germany that imposed the ban on sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in all of the European Union has lifted the ban for countries outside of Germany. The court said it was unclear whether it had the authority to impose a ban on a company from South Korea from selling products outside of Germany.

Allegedly, Apple has doctored evidence presented to the court that makes the Galaxy Tab 10.1 appear to look more similar to the iPad than it actually does.

Google pays Motorola $2.5 billion if purchase falls through

According to sources reporting to Bloomberg, Google will have to pay Motorola $2.5 billion if its proposed purchase does not get approved and completed. The $2.5 billion break-up fee is six times the usual amount, and is a full 20 percent of the $12.5 billion purchase price that Google announced yesterday.

Google Nexus S 4G owners get first dibs at new Swype update

Popular third-party Android keyboard Swype is getting an update today that adds a few new features, such as gestures to launch apps, automatic capitalization of proper nouns, and personal dictionaries. The catch is that you will have to be an owner of a Google Nexus S 4G smartphone on Sprint in order to get first access to the new features.
