AT&T to require voicemail passwords by default starting today

AT&T today updated its voicemail security policy to require new users enter a password to access their voicemail account by default. Previously, the default setting for voicemail did not require a password to access the inbox, but users could opt to use one if they desired.

AT&T looks to purchase more 700MHz spectrum

AT&T has filed with the Federal Communications Commission seeking permission to purchase more spectrum in the 700MHz range. Specifically, it is looking to buy spectrum from BTA Ventures, which owns sections of the 700MHz B block in the New Jersey area. AT&T claims that this acquisition will allow it to provide better service and coverage in the area, and increase its system capacity. The carrier is using this same argument to defend its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA, which has yet to be approved.

Two-thirds of cellphone users see spam text messages

A survey of 500 cellphone users has revealed some interesting stats regarding text message spam. According to the results, 68 percent of users see unwanted text messages on their mobile phones, and 12 percent get charged for each unwanted message received, since they don't have a text messaging plan on their account.

T-Mobile MVNO complains to FCC about AT&T buy

An MVNO that uses T-Mobile USA's network has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission regarding the proposed buyout of T-Mobile by AT&T. The T-Mobile partner, IDT, says that the purchase would make it very difficult for it to compete in the marketplace.

Huawei HiLink data card gets users connected in as little as 15 seconds

Huawei has announced a new USB data card that promises to get users up and connected to the internet in as little as 15 seconds. The HiLink uses patented technologies to skip the driver installation and dial-in process that occurs with other data cards currently on the market.

Nokia Siemens Networks drops 1,500 jobs from its payroll

Nokia Siemens Networks, the joint venture from Nokia and Siemens that provides network infrastructure and support, has announced that it plans to cut 1,500 jobs from from its payroll. The joint venture gained almost 7,000 positions when it acquired part of Motorola Solutions earlier this year, and these cuts are coming from those acquired departments.

Samsung Conquer 4G makes WiMAX more affordable for Sprint customers

Samsung and Sprint have announced the latest 4G WiMAX smartphone for the carrier, the Conquer 4G. The Conquer 4G features Android 2.3 Gingerbread, though the press images would have you thinking different, and will retail for under $100 on a new two-year contract.

AT&T to cancel unlimited data plans for users illegally tethering

According to info obtained by 9to5Mac, AT&T is actively moving users who make use of grandfathered, unlimited smartphone data plans for tethering, switching them to a current, and more expensive, tethering plan with a data cap. Previously AT&T had only warned such users that they needed to switch.

Apple has been given the crown of world's top smartphone manufacturer by another research firm, as the 20.3 million sales of its iPhone smartphone in Q2 were enough to leapfrog Nokia and keep ahead of Samsung.

HTC buys Dashwire to strengthen cloud offerings

HTC has announced the purchase of Dashwire, a Seattle-based company that provides cloud services for Android, Windows Mobile, and Symbian smartphones. The purchase, which could be worth as much as $18.5 million, is said to strengthen HTC's cloud services, but could also provide much-needed patents to the Taiwanese company.
