HTC not concerned about effects from Apple lawsuit

According to CEO Peter Chou, HTC is not too worried about the patent lawsuit it faces from Apple. He says that the lawsuit will not have a fundamental impact on the company as a whole, and that HTC plans on doing business as usual.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet streets August 23 for $479.99

The more dressed up of the two Android tablets recently announced by Lenovo, the ThinkPad Tablet, did not have a release date when it was originally revealed. Thanks to Lenovo's online store, we now can expect the ThinkPad Tablet to be available on August 23 for the previously announced price of $479.99 for the 16GB version. As a reminder, the ThinkPad Tablet is a 10.1-inch, Tegra 2-powered Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet with digitizer pen support, though you will have to pay an additional fee for the pen accessory. Lenovo is positioning the ThinkPad Tablet as being for business users, but, if well executed, I can think of a number of consumers who wouldn't mind carrying one around.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread update available for real this time

Sony Ericsson has gone ahead and made it known that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Xperia X10 smartphone that was said to be available, and then wasn't, is now available for real. The update brings all of the goodies that normally come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, including faster performance and better copy/paste support, and also adds Sony Ericsson's custom Facebook Inside Xperia interface.

Google updates search pages for tablets

Google is rolling out an updated search page for the iPad and Android-based tablets that makes better use of the larger touchscreen available on such devices. The search results layout has been simplified, and there is a new button below the search box to quickly choose between specific types of search results, like Images, Places, Videos, and Shopping. Google has improved the Image results page with enlarged previews, continuous scroll, and faster thumbnail loading. Users should see the new updates on their tablets appear over the coming days.

CTIA, carriers want 3GHz and below spectrum cleared for wireless use

The CTIA and the major carriers in the U.S. penned a letter to President Obama on Thursday petitioning him to clear spectrum below 3GHz so that it may be used for wireless networks. Currently, there are a number of blocks of spectrum that are sectioned off for government use, but are currently unused or underutilized.

Samsung Galaxy R official, cheap alternative to Galaxy S II

We got a sneak peek at the Galaxy R a couple of weeks ago, but now it looks like Samsung has gone ahead and made the little brother to the Galaxy S II official. As expected, the Galaxy R maintains the look and many of the features of the Galaxy S II, but it swaps out some of the components in order to reach a lower price point than its flagship sibling.

Nokia slips in phone shipments, still holds on to first place

Nokia may have lost the smartphone title belt to Apple and Samsung, but it has managed to hang on to the top slot for general phone shipments worldwide. Despite still being in first place, Nokia's market share did take a 29 percent nosedive in Q2 2011.

Google buys 1,030 IBM patents, hopes to stave off lawsuits

Google may not be a fan of patents and the endless litigation that surrounds them, but this hasn't stopped it from snapping up a suite of patents from IBM that cover a number of computer manufacturing technologies. It is well known that Google does not have the same patent strength that its rivals in the smartphone space have, and this has exposed it to a number of lawsuits claiming patent infringements.

Strategy Analytics has released its latest research on the global smartphone market, and as many have expected to happen, both Apple and Samsung have leapfrogged Nokia in market share. Apple sits at the top, but Samsung had the largest growth compared to its global position last year.

Dell Streak 10 Pro Android tablet unveiled for Chinese market

As promised, Dell has released the Streak 10 Pro Android tablet for the Chinese market. The Streak 10 Pro is Dell's first Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet, and it follows the smaller Streak 5 and Streak 7 tablets that have been previously released.
