Vodafone Australia swaps Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v for 10.1 too

Just like its UK cousin, Vodafone Australia has ditched the old, fat design of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v and has opted to only offer the new, slimmed-down Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 still isn't available to purchase in Australia, but prospective buyers cannot buy the 10.1v anymore because Vodafone is no longer offering it. Hopefully the new version will be released soon, but neither Samsung nor Vodafone have announced a launch date.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 video shows off new TouchWiz features

A new promo video for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Samsung shows off some of the new features that we can expect to see when the TouchWiz user interface update comes for the Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet. In addition to some new widgets and skinning of certain areas of the system, the update will also add quick-access Mini Apps to accomplish a variety of tasks.

Microsoft updates Bing for iPad with easy copy, paste feature

Microsoft is releasing an update for its already excellent Bing for iPad app that makes copying and pasting information a snap. Called Lasso, the new feature allows users to draw a circle around a word or term and instantly initiate a search.

HTC beats estimates in quarterly sales, continues to grow

HTC, Asia's second-largest cellphone company after Samsung, has posted its sales for Q2 2011 and has beat analyst expectations. The manufacturer doubled its sales from a year ago, and is on pace to ship 50 million units in 2011.

T-Mobile adds voice to text service to Visual Voicemail Android app

T-Mobile pushed out an update this weekend to its Visual Voicemail app for Android smartphones that offers an optional voice to text transcription service. The service, which costs $3.99 per month, will transcribe a voicemail message into text and display it in the inbox of the Visual Voicemail app, similar to how Google Voice handles voicemail messages. The new Visual Voicemail app is free and available to T-Mobile Android users now.

Verizon Wireless confirms tiered data plans take effect July 7

Verizon Wireless has confirmed to Fierce Wireless that its long-rumored tiered data plans will go into effect on July 7. On that date, customers will no longer have an option for an unlimited data package, unless they already have the plan and are grandfathered in.

Google Nexus One on Vodafone finally getting its Gingerbread

Owners of the Google Nexus One smartphone that are locked to Vodafone have been waiting a long time for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update to become available. Well, today is their lucky day, as Vodafone has finally announced that the update is pushing out to users. Among the many benefits of Android 2.3 Gingerbread are a new and improved interface and a much-improved keyboard. Users will get a notification on their phones when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

Microsoft locks up licensing deal with yet another Android manufacturer

Microsoft has announced another licensing deal with an Android manufacturer, this time with Wistron Corp. The deal will have Wistron paying Microsoft royalties for every mobile devices that it produces that runs either the Android or Chrome platforms. The agreement with Wistron joins the deals made this year with Onkyo, Velocity Micro, General Dynamics Itronix, and last year's deal with HTC. As with the others, exact details were not disclosed. At this rate, does Microsoft even need to produce any of its own products, or can it just ride out the wave of Android licensees?

Another Chinese company to develop its own OS

According to The Wall Street Journal, Chinese company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is planning to release its own operating system through its Alibaba Cloud Computing unit. This follows news from last week that Baidu, the dominant search provider in China, would be developing its own OS as well.

LightSquared gets $265 million shot in the arm

LightSquared has announced a new round of funding for its upcoming 4G LTE network that totals $265 million. According to the announcement, the funds came from both existing investors and new investors to the company. LightSquared has raised $2.3 billion in funding over the last year. Apparently the company's ongoing battle with the GPS industry has not scared investors away, and LightSquared's promised fixes for any interference issues seem to be enough for investment firms to continue to put money into the company.

HTC Sensation 4G now available from Bell in Canada

HTC's dual-core, Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone, the Sensation 4G, is now available to Canadian residents through Bell. The 4.3-inch, qHD screen-packing Sensation 4G will cost a cool $549 CAD (US$562) off-contract, or $149 CAD with a new, three-year agreement. We reviewed the European version of the Sensation and found it to be fast and responsive with great picture and video quality.

Sprint rolling out Gingerbread update for Samsung Galaxy Tab

Sprint has become the first carrier in the U.S. to roll out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. Beginning today, some users should get a notification on their tablets informing them that the EF17 update is ready to be downloaded and installed. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update brings all of the usual enhancements, like better performance and a tweaked user interface, and it also includes HID Bluetooth support. The update is delivered over-the-air and Sprint says it should take about 5 minutes to download. So, Sprint Galaxy Tab owners, are you excited for some new life to be breathed into your 8 month-old tablet, or are you just blinded with Honeycomb envy at this point?

HP Pre 3 listed at 399 GBP for Europe

HP's latest hope for the webOS platform on smartphones, the Pre 3, has been listed on its European web store for the cool price of 399 GBP (US$643) SIM-free. Availability is showing as out-of-stock, and unfortunately prospective owners cannot place a pre-order at this point. A release is hopefully not that far off, though, since the price has been set for the smartphone. As a refresher, the Pre 3 sports a 1.4GHz processor and a 3.6-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen. HP had originally promised the device would hit shelves this summer.

Apple iPad accounts for 1 percent of worldwide web browsing

According to NetMarketShare's latest report, Apple's ubiquitous iPad tablet now accounts for 1 percent of all the browsing done worldwide. Narrow down the scope to the U.S. and that figure jumps to 2.1 percent of all browsing activity. Pretty impressive for a device that has only been on the market for 14 months.

LG Optimus 3D now available in the UK from Carphone Warehouse

It was only a short time ago that Carphone Warehouse put LG's 3D wonder, the Optimus 3D, up for pre-order to UK residents, and now it is available for general purchase. The dual-core, dual-channel, dual-memory Android 2.2 Froyo-powered smartphone will set buyers back a cool 500 GBP (US$806) SIM-free, or free on contract plans that cost 35 GBP per month or more.
