Japan to get world's first Windows Phone Mango smartphone

Japanese carrier KDDI paired up with Fujitsu and Microsoft to announce the world's first Windows Phone Mango device to hit the market, the Toshiba-branded IS12T. Coming in September, the IS12T is also the first Windows Phone smartphone to sport a rugged and waterproof design.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits 5 million sold without U.S. help

It wasn't that long ago that we were reporting that Samsung had sold 3 million units of its Galaxy S II smartphone, and here we are again to let you know that the company has now sold 5 million of the dual-core-powered uberphone. It took Samsung a mere 55 days to hit the 3 million mark, and only 30 more days to hit 5 million, both of which are new records for the manufacturer. Samsung claims it is now selling the phone at a rate of one every 1.5 seconds. It shouldn't be too long before the Galaxy S II hits its next milestone either, as it has just launched in China and is set to arrive in the U.S. market in August.

Motorola DROID X2 gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Verizon Wireless has let loose the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Motorola DROID X2 smartphone. The update brings a bevy of improvements to both the core operating system and Motorola's interface-formerly-known-as-MOTOBLUR that brings the DROID X2 up to par with its Motorola DROID 3 stablemate.

Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones, PlayBook updated to version 2.0

RIM has announced that versions 2.0 of both the Facebook for BlackBerry and Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook apps are now available. The updates bring a number of new features that users have been asking for, including Facebook Places access on the PlayBook and Facebook Chat on BlackBerry smartphones.

Motorola XOOM tablet 4G LTE upgrade coming in September

If you can remember way back to February of this year when Verizon Wireless launched the Motorola XOOM, the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet to hit the market, the carrier had promised that it would get its anemic 3G CDMA radio upgraded to a speedy 4G LTE unit by this summer. Well, it appears Verizon's summer extends into September, as we have just received word from the carrier that the ninth month of this year is when the LTE upgrade will be available to XOOM owners.

Health advocates demand FCC change cell tower rules

Dolphin releases beta version of Android tablet browser

Popular third-party browser for Android developer Dolphin has just released a beta version of its browser for Android 3 Honeycomb tablets. Version 1.0 Beta of Dolphin Browser for Pad offers many of the same features as its smartphone counterpart, but it has been optimized for the larger screen that a tablet offers.

Windows Phone Mango update goes gold, gets released to manufacturers

It was rumored last week that the Mango version of Windows Phone that is due to appear this fall was released to manufacturers, but now Microsoft has gone ahead and confirmed that it has been released as of this morning. Release to manufacturer (RTM) is the final step in an operating system's development cycle, and it means that Microsoft feels that the features are ready for the prime time.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread update now available

Today is a good day for owners of the non-carrier branded of Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 smartphone, as the company has finally released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the device. The update brings version 2.3.3 of Android, along with the latest version of Sony Ericsson's Facebook Inside Xperia interface, refreshed music and photo widgets, and the ability to sort apps in the app tray. Users can also use their X10s as mobile hotspots after applying the update. The update has to be downloaded and installed through Sony Ericsson's PC Companion software, so it is not an over-the-air delivery. No word on when, or if, the update will be made available to carrier branded versions of the X10.

Foursquare for BlackBerry gets its BBM integration back

Foursquare for BlackBerry has received an update to version 3.1 that adds back in the BlackBerry Messenger integration that was missing from the most recent 3.0 version. The BBM integration was present in earlier test versions of the 3.0 update, but it was removed when the update was made generally available to the public. Users can grab the updated application from the BlackBerry App World now.

Microsoft updates OneNote Mobile for iPhone, adds search

Microsoft has released an update to its OneNote Mobile app for the iPhone that allows users to capture notes and thoughts that sync back to their OneNote account in Microsoft's Office Web Apps and desktop software. The new update gives users the ability to search through their notes right from the iPhone, as well as a number of other controls.

Verizon turns on more 4G LTE markets on August 18

Verizon Wireless has announced a list of new markets that will be getting 4G LTE service come August 18. Included in the list are Bakersfield, Salinas, and Monterey, Ca.; Collins, Co.; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Worcester, Mass.; Omaha, Neb.; Albany, Ithaca, and Syracuse, N.Y.; Columbus, Ohio; Altoona and Johnstown, Pa.; and Provo/Orem, Utah. The carrier is also expanding coverage in MetroWest, Mass.; Nyack, West Nyack, Orangeburg, Pearl Riverl, and Spring Valley, N.Y.; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Government claims authority to track citizens with cell site data

According to a lawyer for the National Security Administration, the government could have the authority to track U.S. citizen's location based on cellular network data. Matthew Olsen, the head of the National Counterterrorism Center at the NSA, was questioned on the matter by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Kobo beats Apple's rules with HTML5 web app

The Kobo store and e-book reader was one of the casualties of Apple's enforcement of its new in-app purchasing policy this week, as Kobo removed the ability to purchase new books from within its app to avoid giving Apple 30 percent of its revenues from each book sale. In order to provide its users with an easy way to purchase new books from their iOS smartphone or tablet, Kobo has announced the development of a HTML5-powered webapp that is compatible with the iPhone and iPad browser.

T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread update now available in OTA form

Last week, owners of the T-Mobile G2x could download the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for their devices and manually install it using LG's software on a computer. Now T-Mobile has made it a bit easier for everyone to update to the latest and greatest version of Android, as it has started its over-the-air roll-out of the update. As is the usual case with OTA updates, this one will likely hit users gradually until all G2x's have been updated. Users should get a notification on their phones when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

Ustream has updated its iOS app with an all-new interface specifically designed for the iPad. With Ustream for iPad, you can watch your favorite live video content and upload your own video stream, provided you have an iPad 2, of course. You can login to your Ustream account to access your saved feeds, and share what you are viewing with Facebook and Twitter. Ustream also recently released an Android 3 Honeycomb version of its app for Android tablets that offers much of the same experience, including live video uploading. Google Nexus S 4G update removes free wireless hotspot ability

According to what appears to be a leaked internal Sprint memo, the latest update to the Google Nexus S 4G that addresses WiMAX and Wi-Fi performance issues also removes the ability for users to tether and use their phones as mobile hotspots for free. Users will now have to subscribe to one of Sprint's mobile hotspot plans in order to take advantage of the feature. This is a different stance than T-Mobile takes with its version of the Nexus S, as it does not block the built-in tethering function of Android if a user does not have a tethering plan on their account.

Mozilla announces Boot To Gecko OS, hopes to take webapps to smartphones

Mozilla has announced its intent to build a new standalone operating system called Boot To Gecko that will allow webapps to take center stage on devices like smartphones. Similar to Google's Chrome OS, B2G will allow developers to use familiar HTML5 development technologies to build fully integrated apps that could run on a smartphone.

YouTube eats up 22 percent of mobile bandwidth usage

If you think that views of silly cat videos and Rebecca Black's Friday don't add up to a whole lot of bandwidth, well then you would be mistaken. According to a new report by Allot Communications, YouTube now makes up 22 percent of mobile bandwidth usage, and is responsible for 52 percent of mobile video streaming.

LTE-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hits Verizon on July 28

Verizon Wireless has announced that the LTE-equipped version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available in stores and online on July 28. Customers will be able to choose between Metallic Grey or Glossy White color options for both 16GB and 32GB versions of the 4G tablet. The 16GB edition costs $529.99, while the 32GB version runs $629.99, both with a required two-year data plan agreement. Data plans start at $30 per month for 2GB of data usage and go on up to $80 per month for a 10GB allotment. Customers will also be able to pick up the 16GB Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Verizon Wireless stores on July 28 for $499.99

Clearwire has announced an update to its CLEAR Spot mobile hotspot that was release back in 2009. The new CLEAR Spot 4G Apollo mobile hotspot allows up to 8 simultaneous 4G connections to Clearwire's WiMAX network.

HTC wants to negotiate with Apple over patent dispute

HTC's Chief Financial Officer, Winston Yung, has made statements saying that his company is willing to negotiate with Apple regarding the patent infringement suits that Apple has brought against HTC. The International Trade Commission recently awarded Apple a preliminary ruling in the case, which concluded that HTC was in violation of two of Apple's patents.

RadioShack drops T-Mobile, picks up Verizon on September 15

Electronics retailer RadioShack has announced that starting September 14, it will be no longer sell T-Mobile phones and service plans in its company-owned stores. The next day, on September 15, the Shack will begin to offer Verizon Wireless phones and plans in place of the exiting T-Mobile wares in both stores and online. RadioShack also offers phones and services from Sprint and AT&T and their subsidiaries, which will continue to be available. RadioShack currently owns and operates more than 4,300 retail locations, as well as offers wireless products and services through its online store.
