Google Nexus S 4G joins Skype video chat party

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:35 PM PDT

While the Google Nexus S was one of the four lucky phones to get the new video calling feature in Skype for Android, the Nexus S 4G variant for Sprint had no such luck. Well, today is another day, and it looks like Skype has added video calling support for the WiMAX version of the Nexus S. Version 2.0.0.47 is available now, and it adds support for the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and the Nexus S in Europe, which was also lacking video calling. Skype did not provide a reason why these phones didn't have the feature from the get-go.

Cincinnati Bell finally updates Motorola Milestone XT720 to Froyo, throws in root tool to boot

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:09 PM PDT

Here is something you don't see everyday: a carrier has provided a rooting tool to its subscribers so they can hack their Android handsets. With the long-overdue update to Android 2.2 Froyo for the Motorola Milestone XT720, regional carrier Cincinnati Bell has also included a tool to easily root the device from a computer. A user can do all kinds of nefarious things with a rooted phone, not to mention tether illegitimately, so this is a bit surprising to see coming from a carrier. It doesn't look like this is an over-the-air update, so users will have to download the update file to a PC and install it on their phones from there.

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 01:37 PM PDT

Nokia's high-end Vertu line of phones were its last hold-out in the Japanese market, but even the high-priced exclusivity that came with those bejeweled handsets couldn't keep Nokia in Japan, as the Finnish manufacturer reportedly has plans to shut down the two remaining Vertu stores in the country by the end of this month. Nokia had stopped selling S40 and Symbian phones in Japan some time ago, but it continued to sell the models in its Vertu line. Nokia will shut down its last offices left in Japan by the end of the year.

Windows Phone Marketplace tips the scales at 25,000 apps

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:16 AM PDT

According to app aggregator WindowsPhoneApplist, the Windows Phone Marketplace is now home to over 25,000 applications, a considerable step up from the 17,000 that were in the Marketplace at the end of May. Microsoft's strategy is quality over quantity, but having more apps than others stores, like RIM's BlackBerry World and HP's App Catalog, certainly doesn't hurt. Of course, Microsoft has a long way to go to catch market leaders Apple and Google, whose app stores reportedly hold 425,000 and 200,000 apps respectively.
