ASUS Eee Pad Slider release slides back to the fall

ASUS' funky Eee Pad Slider Android tablet that has a slide-out keyboard below its 10.1-inch IPS display was supposed to be released to the masses back in April, and then this summer when it missed the April mark. Unfortunately, ASUS has announced that it will not released the Eee Pad Slider until later this fall, though it did not give a reason why. Some have speculated that the company has had issues with the sliding hinge mechanism that makes the Slider so special. ASUS' other odd-ball Android tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer that docks into a full-size keyboard, has seen a fair amount of success despite inventory constraints making it difficult to find in stores.

VIZIO tablet available for pre-order from Amazon, too

VIZIO's upcoming 8-inch Android tablet is making the pre-order rounds before its official launch. The latest place that you can submit an order for the generically-named Tablet is Amazon, who has lopped $30 off the price that VIZIO is asking for it, as placing a pre-order through Amazon will only set you back $349, compared to the $379 VIZIO is asking. The 8-inch tablet features a 1024 x 768 pixel screen, a 1GHz processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with VIZIO's custom interface. It is expected to be available on July 18.

Toshiba has announced a CMOS image sensor for smartphones that features a new 1.12 micrometer size pixel, making it the smallest pixel size available. Despite the tiny pixels, Toshiba promises better low-light sensitivity thanks to back-side illumination technology.

Good news for Barnes & Noble NOOK owners who have subscribed to the New York Times on their e-reader tablet. In addition to getting the daily edition delivered to their tablet each morning, they can now access the entire New York Times website, even the articles that are behind the paywall, without limit. Current subscribers to the NOOK edition will get information sent to them explaining how to access the website. The New York Times is available on the NOOK for a 14-day free trial if you have not already purchased a subscription.

UK Motorola XOOM buyers get free wireless keyboard and mouse

In lieu of the price drop that Motorola announced for the XOOM tablet in the U.S., the company is giving away a free wireless keyboard and mouse worth 79.99 GBP (US$128) with each XOOM purchased in the UK. In order to claim the free keyboard and mouse, you need to purchase a XOOM and then send in your receipt to Motorola, which will in turn send out the keyboard and mouse goodies. The promotion is said to be while supplies last, and started at the beginning of this month.

Conversations about Android development rarely pass without mention of the "F-word." In this case, the word is "fragmentation," something that the platform catches a lot of heat over. Critics usually point to the variety of versions of Android that are on the market, and the various hardware designs that run them, as one of the weaknesses in the platform. The critics may be right for now, but it looks like the Android universe is gelling around a select few versions of the OS, led by Android 2.2 Froyo, but with 2.3 Gingerbread coming on strong.
