Samsung's own Galaxy Note teardown reveals unannounced NFC support

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 08:50 AM PST

Samsung released an interesting and informative breakdown of the components found within the LTE version of the Galaxy Note for AT&T and, in effect, revealed that the smartphone/tablet hybrid has support for Near Field Communications, something that was not revealed when the Note was announced. The NFC antenna can be found inside the battery cover, a bit different from the implementation on the Galaxy S II smartphone that has the NFC chip affixed to the battery itself. Until we get extensive time with an LTE version of the Galaxy Note, we won't know if it comes with any software to actually make use of the NFC chip, or if AT&T will provide any services to go along with it. We don't doubt that the enterprising Android community will likely find a way to make Google Wallet work with the Galaxy Note shortly after it is released, however.

Video: LG Spectrum (Verizon) Android smartphone unboxing and video tour - part 1

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 06:37 AM PST

The LG Spectrum for Verizon Wireless is a relatively affordable variant of LG's popular Optimus LTE line of smartphones. It features 4G LTE data support, a large 4.5-inch 720p (1280 x 720 pixel) resolution touchscreen displays, and a pair of cameras - a 1.3 megapixel forward-facing unit for video chatting and an 8 megapixel main rear camera. A dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM make sure that it all runs smoothly, too. But in spite of a rather impressive spec sheet, the Spectrum didn't impress us nearly as much as AT&T's LG Nitro HD, which is so similar to the Spectrum, but better in many regards.
