Verizon activates 4.2 million iPhones, 2.2 million LTE devices in Q4 2011

Speaking at a mobile conference in San Francisco, Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo has revealed that the carrier activated a record 4.2 million Apple iPhones during Q4 2011, which covered the holiday shopping season. In addition to the large number of iPhones, Big Red turned on service for 2.2 million LTE devices in the quarter - another record.

Nokia tests solar power for cellphones, deems it not worthy

Nokia has published the results of a test it did to determine if solar charging was a feasible option for cellphones. Though solar charging does have its place in certain applications, the results of the tests determined that it doesn't quite fit the bill for mobile devices.

MetroPCS changes channel to 2007, plans to launch mobile TV service this year

MetroPCS has announced that it will be launching a mobile television service later this year in a partnership with the Mobile Content Venture. The carrier will be the first launch the Dyle Mobile TV service to consumers.

Nokia releases Car Mode app for Belle smartphones

Nokia has made the Car Mode app that was initially announced in September available for download on Belle (Symbian OS) smartphones. The Car Mode app allows users to connect their smartphones to a vehicle's head unit and control them from there. Users can access navigation services, traffic information, music, and voice calls without having to touch the phone itself. The app can be downloaded for Belle phones from the Nokia Store now. Nokia says that the Car Mode app is in development for the N9 and will be available in the near future.

Chile bans sale of SIM-locked cellphones starting January 16

The country of Chile has announced that it will require all cellphones sold to be unlocked starting January 16. Owners who purchased their phones before January 16 will be able to unlock them through a web interface with their IMEI and device information.

Apple has announced that its latest smartphone, the iPhone 4S, will be available for purchase in China and 21 other countries around the world starting next Friday, January 13. With the expansion to China and other parts of the world, the iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries.

Android Market home to 400,000 apps says Distimo

According to app watchdog Distimo, the Android Market is now home to over 400,000 apps, with 100,000 developers contributing to it. The Market added 100,000 new apps since August, 2011, when it topped the 300,000 mark.

Google requiring default Holo theme access in Android 4.0 ICS devices

The Android Developers blog has revealed that Google is now requiring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device makers to include the standard, Holo theme with their smartphones and tablets in order to get access to the Android Market. The Holo theme allows app developers to have a unified look and feel to their apps, even if they are used on a variety of devices.

Google nabs 222 more patents from IBM

According to a recent filing at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and confirmed by Google, Google has acquired over 200 published and pending patents from IBM. These patents are in addition to the over 2,000 patents that Google received from IBM earlier in 2011.
