AT&T changes up data plans for smartphones, tablets on January 22

AT&T has announced some upcoming changes to its data plan offerings for smartphones and tablets that will take effect this coming Sunday, January 22. The new plans offer more data, but also cost more per month.

The BlackBerry Curve 9370 is the latest mid-tier smartphone for Verizon Wireless to come from Research In Motion. It features world roaming capabilities and runs on BlackBerry OS 7, though an update to 7.1 is promised for the near future. Spec-wise, the 9370 features NFC support, a 5 megapixel camera, a 2.44-inch display, and, of course, a fine 4-row QWERTY keyboard for making quick work of messaging tasks.

Android 4.0 ICS update for Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM tablet now official

Earlier today it was reported that users began seeing the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich hit their Wi-Fi-only Motorola XOOM tablets, and now the company has officially announced the roll-out of the upgrade. The update brings all that one would expect from Android 4.0, including a better, faster browser; redesigned app launcher; more resizable widgets; and better media capabilities. Android 4.0 also includes a new People app for contacts that sports integration with Google+ and other social networks. Motorola says the upgrade will roll-out over the next few weeks, and users will get a notification when it is ready to be installed.

Nokia delivering second battery fix update to Lumia 800 over next two weeks

Nokia has revealed that the second software update for the Lumia 800 to address battery concerns will be delivered to users over the next two weeks. Last month, Nokia acknowledged the issue that some users experienced where the phone would not report the full capacity of the internal battery. There are also other performance improvements baked into the software update, but it is not clear whether or not the update will bring the Lumia 800 up to the latest version of Windows Phone 7.5 offered by Microsoft that includes the fix for the disappearing virtual keyboard bug. Users will get a notification on their devices when the software update is ready to be installed, at which point they will need to plug their phones into a Mac or PC to complete the installation.

Verizon's 4G LTE network stretches to 5 new markets, expands in 3 others tomorrow

Verizon Wireless has announced the latest round of expansion for its rapidly growing 4G LTE network. It now plans to bring the high-speed wireless service to five new markets and expand its service area in three existing markets come tomorrow, January 19. The new markets to enjoy Verizon's flavor of 4G LTE are Glens Falls and Utica, N.Y.; Lawton, Okla.; and Brownsville and McAllen, Texas, and the expanded markets include Atlanta, Houston, and Spokane, Wash. Once these new markets go live, Verizon's 4G footprint will then cover 195 markets and over 200 million Americans.

Google+ mobile site updated with new features; iOS, Android apps next

Google updated the mobile website Google+ to add new features and remove the confusing (and rarely-used, according to Google) Incoming column. In place of the Incoming column is the new What's Hot column, which quickly shows what has been popular on Google+ throughout the day. This can be accessed by swiping right from the main Circles stream. Also new is the ability to see which users +1'd a post. Google says that these new features will be coming to the native iOS and Android apps in the near future. For the time being, users can head to plus.google.com in their mobile device's browser to check out the new stuff.

LightSquared says recent GPS testing was unfair, shrouded in secrecy

LightSquared held a media briefing today to take to task the recent reports of testing of GPS receivers against its proposed network. The recent tests said that LightSquared's network would cause interference with GPS devices and be harmful to the use of them in various applications that include aviation and defense systems.

Samsung has responded to a report from yesterday that claimed it was in talks to purchase RIM and that it was the front-runner among the possible suitors for RIM. Samsung categorically denies the report and claims that it has no interest in purchasing RIM.

It appears that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Motorola's Wi-Fi only XOOM tablet has started rolling out to users. There are a multitude of reports on the popular hacking site XDA-Developers stating as much. Motorola had previously indicated that we should expect to see the update soon.
