Video: ViewSonic E70 and 10e Android tablets from CES 2012 Posted: 17 Jan 2012 11:48 AM PST A CES 2012 ViewSonic was showing off some of its Android-powered tablets, including the brand new E70 7-inch unit. The low-cost tablet ($170 suggested retail) features a single-core 1GHz processor, HDMI output, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion. The slightly older 10e model features a larger display, as you might guess. Watch the video here. |

T-Mobile, Walmart offer unlimited data with their Family Mobile Plan Posted: 17 Jan 2012 10:11 AM PST T-Mobile and Walmart have announced that the exclusive Family Mobile Plan offered at Walmart stores now includes unlimited data. The plan costs $45 per month for the first line, with each additional line costing $35 per month extra. It includes unlimited minutes, text messages, and now data services. The data services are technically unlimited, but they only include 250MB of data usage at 3G speeds, after which users will be limited to 2G speeds until the next billing cycle. Early adopting customers can take advantage of a special promotion from T-Mobile that offers 3G speeds through the first 5GB of usage until March 31 if they sign up for the plan by March 16. Verizon knocks $100 off Motorola DROID RAZR's price, yanks 16GB microSD card from box Posted: 17 Jan 2012 08:44 AM PST Verizon Wireless has announced that it has started selling a version of the Motorola DROID RAZR smartphone that does not include the 16GB microSD card that originally came with the device. The new version costs $199.99 on-contract - $100 less than before - and is otherwise identical in hardware to the originally-released model. It still has the 16GB of internal storage, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch AMOLED display, a 7.1mm-thick frame, and 4G LTE connectivity. Of course, the microSD slot is still functional, so users can add up to 32GB of storage with a microSD card if they choose. The new, cheaper version of the DROID RAZR is available now in black, while similar white and purple versions of the phone will arrive on January 23. Read the full story here. |

Apple extends iTunes Match service to 19 more countries Posted: 17 Jan 2012 07:30 AM PST Apple has expanded the availability of its iTunes Match service to 19 more countries in Latin America and Europe. iTunes Match is Apple's cloud-based answer to Google Music and Amazon's Cloud Player, and allows users to access all of their songs on any of their iOS devices for a yearly subscription fee of $25. The new countries to get the service are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Latvia, Lithuania, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela in Latin America and the Netherlands in Europe. Adobe updates Flash Player, AIR for Android with performance enhancements, bug fixes Posted: 17 Jan 2012 07:11 AM PST Adobe has released updates for its Flash Player and AIR apps for the Android platform. The update for Flash Player 11.1 offers security patches and bug fixes, while AIR 3.1 gains compatibility with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in addition to the performance tweaks and bug fixes. Adobe has said that it is discontinuing development on Flash Player for mobile devices, but that it would continue to release security updates as needed, and that is apparently what this update addresses. ASUS aware of Transformer Prime Android 4.0 ICS upgrade issues; working on a fix Posted: 17 Jan 2012 06:55 AM PST Owners of the ASUS Transformer Prime tablet were ecstatic last week when the company announced that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade was available ahead of schedule and was being delivered to users immediately. That excitement was tempered somewhat for a few users, as they received a rather innocuous error stating "Serial Number Not Found" when they tried to apply the upgrade. The error prevents the upgrade from completing, leaving the users on Android 3.2 Honeycomb. ASUS claims that it is aware of the problem, has been able to reproduce it, and is currently working on a fix. It is not known how many Transformer Prime tablets are affected by the problem, but some users report that performing a factory reset on the device has proven successful in side-stepping the issue. HTC offers bootloader unlock tool for more smartphone models Posted: 17 Jan 2012 05:59 AM PST HTC recently announced that the bootloader unlock tool that allows users to load custom versions of the Android operating system on their devices is now available for more smartphones in the HTC family. The new phones added to the compatibility list for the tool are the HTC Desire Z, ChaCha, Aria, DROID Incredible, Status, and T-Mobile G2. As before, use of the tool requires the Android SDK and will void the device's warranty. Read the full story here. |
Samsung to use larger smartphone batteries for all-day use in 2012 Posted: 17 Jan 2012 05:37 AM PST Samsung vice president Kevin Packingham has said that his company intends for the batteries in all of its 2012 smartphones to be able to last at least a full day, from wake-up until bed, with average to moderately heavy use.
