LG Spectrum (Verizon) 4G LTE 4.5-inch smartphone hands-on from CES

We got some hands-on time with the just announced Spectrum smartphone from LG. The new device is headed straight to Verizon Wireless and offers 4G LTE connectivity and boasts a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 pixel HD IPS display with a pixel density of 329 points per inch.

Ringing cellphone stops NY Philharmonic performance

Ring, ring. Ring, ring. That is what was heard during the final movement of the New York Philharmonic performance of Gusta Mahler's Ninth Symphony. Maestro Alan Gilbert decided to halt the orchestra until the owner turned his phone off. This is the first time that Gilbert has ever stopped a performance due to a ringing cellphone or other interruption.

LG looking for partners to bolster its mobile phone business

According to a Reuters report, LG is actively seeking partners to help bolster its mobile phone unit, which has been struggling for the past year and a half. LG Mobile CEO Park Jong-seok said that "we're looking into almost every alliance that the mobile industry can think of" in an interview. LG announced a renewed partnership with fashion house Prada just last month. LG's mobile unit has lost nearly $1 billion dollars in the past 6 reporting quarters.

Sony Music Unlimited headed to Apple iOS devices

Sony has announced it will offer its Music Unlimited streaming service on Apple's iOS devices soon. Available already to both PC and Android users, the streaming service will now become available iOS at some point this quarter. An iPhone and iPad app are expected that will offer offline caching for subscribers, similar to competitors like Spotify and Rdio. Sony Unlimited Music service has over 1 million users to date.

LG licenses Microsoft patent portfolio for Android, Chrome OS devices

LG Spectrum, Motorola DROID 4 LTE smartphones to get global roaming abilities this year

It appears that the Motorola DROID 4 and LG Spectrum for Verizon Wireless have been keeping secrets. Both phones have built-in hardware support for global roaming on GSM and UMTS based networks - it's just that this functionality has been disabled. For now. A Verizon spokesperson told PhoneScoop that the latent abilities in these new 4G LTE devices will be activated after Verizon has had a chance to make some changes to its network - something that is likely to happen during the first half of 2012.
