Apple added to Bluetooth SIG board

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced that Apple has been added to its board of directors. Apple, along with newcomer Nordic Semiconductor, joins Motorola, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, Ericsson, and Toshiba on the board. Apple is said to help develop the platform at an application level, furthering Bluetooth 4.0 adoption. The two-year membership begins July 1.

Sprint tells AT&T how it's done; no purchase of T-Mobile necessary

Verizon adding new cities to its 4G LTE network on July 21

Verizon Wireless has announced that a host of new cities that will getting LTE coverage on July 21. Residents in Springfield, Mass; Huntsville, Ala.; Augusta, Ga.; Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro-Winston, and Salem High-Point, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Charleston, S.C.; Carbondale and Marion, Ill.; and Toledo, Ohio will be able to take advantage of the blistering speeds (and sub-par battery life) that LTE offers. The carrier has also announced that expanded coverage will be available in the areas surrounding Los Angeles and San Diego on the 21st.

FCC vows to fight 'cramming' on mobile phone bills

Federal Communications Commission chief Julius Genachowski announced a plan that will enact a new set of rules and regulations for carriers that would make it more difficult for them to load up unknown charges on customer's bills, a practice known as "cramming."

AT&T unveils new $50 unlimited pre-paid plan

AT&T has announced a new addition to its GoPhone pre-paid service: a $50 per month unlimited plan. The plan, which is only available to feature phone and messaging phone users (sorry, no smartphone love here), offers unlimited talk, text, and web usage for a flat rate. It is very similar to the unlimited plans offered by Boost and other pre-paid carriers. The unlimited GoPhone plan features international text messaging to Mexico,Canada, and over 100 other countries as well. Users can sign up for the new plan online, over the phone, or in-store now.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 headed to Sprint on June 24

Sprint has just announced that it will be carrying the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 beginning June 24. The carrier will be stocking non-3G, Wi-Fi-only versions, much like the way it carries non-3G versions of the Motorola XOOM and BlackBerry PlayBook. The carrier says that the 16GB edition of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available for $499.99. It is the same version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that hit retail shelves last weekend. The tablet will be available online, in-store, and through telesales.

Verizon Wireless to intro tiered data plans in July

A ton of leaks were bouncing around the web yesterday claiming to detail the upcoming tiered data plans that Verizon Wireless is due to implement in the near future. All Things D received a statement from Verizon that confirms the carrier will release new, usage based data plans in July, though the statement does not clarify the date, nor the plans themselves.

BlackBerry Tablet OS for PlayBook updated to 1.0.6, still no email

Last night Research In Motion pushed out an update for the BlackBerry Tablet OS that powers the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, bringing the version up to 1.0.6.2390. This update brought along Adobe Flash Player 10.3 and Adobe AIR 2.7, along with security and bug fixes for Adobe Flash Player. RIM is claiming that the PlayBook will support Flash better than ever, and that the Adobe AIR 2.7 support will open up the platform to new applications that are built for AIR 2.7. Unfortunately, that's it as far as new stuff goes. We're still waiting for that promised email client, RIM.

Nokia pushing Symbian Anna to more devices in July and August

Nokia has announced that the N8, E7, C7, and C6-01 smartphones will begin shipping with the new version of Symbian, dubbed Anna, in July. Existing owners will be able to download the update in August via software on a PC or through the software update utility on phone itself. The Symbian Anna OS debuted with the X7 and E6 that hit the market late last month. Nokia also restated that it will release 10 more Symbian-powered smartphones over the next year.
