Apple files motion to protect developers from Lodsys lawsuit

Apple has filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit that Lodsys has filed against iOS developers. Lodsys claims that the developers violate patents that it owns in regards to in-app purchases, but Apple says that its pre-existing agreement with Lodsys covers all iOS developers.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 3G, Slider tablets hitting UK in August

ASUS UK has confirmed via a post on its official Facebook page that the 3G version of the Eee Pad Transformer Android tablet will be available in August. Also arriving at that time is the even more unique Eee Pad Slider tablet that features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Exact date of release and pricing information for the tablets was not given.

Verizon expands mobile payment repertoire with Payfone partnership

Verizon Wireless has teamed up with Payfone to offer its customers yet another means of mobile payments on their phones. The new partnership will expand upon Verizon's existing BilltoMobile service, but it does not mean that Verizon is breaking from its agreement with AT&T and T-Mobile to deploy an NFC payment system through ISIS.

Virgin Mobile intends to keep its Android clean

You might have noticed that the newly announced Motorola TRIUMPH for Virgin Mobile did not have any MOTOBLUR customizations on it, as is usually the case with higher-end Motorola Android smartphones. This, it seems, was done intentionally, and Virgin Mobile would like the rest of their Android line-up to continue the trend.

Samsung plans flexible cellphone displays for 2012

Samsung has plans to put its new flexible displays into mass production next year, with cell phones utilizing them at that time. The flexible displays use a plastic substrate instead of glass, so that they can be curled and flexed at will. The screens use ~AMOLED technology as well, so Samsung does not have to deal with a backlight. The Korean company also plans to put the new screens in wristwatches in 2012 and tablets and other devices later on.

IM+ for Android updated with photo, sound file sharing, more

Popular multi-system instant messaging app IM+ has released an update to its app for the Android platform. Version 4.1 brings a bunch of new features as well as bug fixes and performance enhancements. Users can now share photos and sound files with chat contacts, search their contact lists, use multiple Facebook accounts, disable emoticons, change the font size in chats, and set IM+ to auto-launch when Android starts up. IM+ offers two apps in the Android Market: a free, ad-supported version, and IM+ Pro, which removes the ads and costs $9.99. Both are available for download now.

AT&T files FCC statement hoping for T-Mobile buyout approval

AT&T has issued a public statement to the FCC regarding its proposed buyout of T-Mobile USA. The carrier attempts to curry favor with the governing body that will eventually approve or deny the acquisition through the letter. In the letter, AT&T reiterates the same points it has been preaching since the proposed acquisition was announced, namely that it will be able to provide more residents with high-speed wireless service after the merger, that jobs and economic growth will be created, and that the wireless market will remain competitive. AT&T also claims that there will be plenty of spectrum available to other carriers post-merger in order to maintain a competitive environment.

Cricket picks up Samsung Chrono flip phone

Following U.S. Cellular's lead, Cricket has announced availability of the Samsung Chrono flip phone. The Chrono is as basic as you can get in today's market, though it does feature 3G connectivity and a VGA camera. The Chrono is available from Cricket now for $59.99 and can be used on any of Cricket's plans.

Nokia talking to bidders for Nokia Siemens joint venture

Despite repeatedly denying that Nokia itself is in danger of a takeover, Nokia has reported that it is in talks with potential buyers of its Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture with Siemens, which provides wireless infrastructure. "There has been unsolicited interest in NSN and we continue to be in constructive talks with multiple parties," claimed Nokia spokesman Doug Dawson, though he would not mention who Nokia had been talking to. A few private-equity groups have been pegged as potential suitors, though none has stepped forward to say they have an interest. The agreement between Nokia and Siemens expires in 2013, and both companies could benefit from a sale of the joint venture.

More GPS tests spell woes for LightSquared's 4G LTE network

LightSquared has been fighting a battle with GPS organizations ever since it announced plans to launch an LTE network on spectrum that is very close to that used by GPS services. LightSquared claims that it can prevent interference, but GPS groups have said that it can't, and more tests have revealed that to be the case.

California will investigate AT&T, T-Mobile deal; vote set for October 6

As was indicated last month, California state regulators have decided to do a full investigation into the proposed buyout of T-Mobile USA by AT&T. California claims that the merger would give AT&T more than 47 percent of the wireless market in the state. AT&T defended the acquisition by claiming that it will be able to provide better service to California residents after the merger. California cannot block the merger, but it can influence the FCC's decision on the matter. A vote on the state's decision on the merger has been set for October 6.

Sprint claims half of phone sales belong to smartphones

During its press conference that unveiled the new Motorola PHOTON 4G and TRIUMPH smartphones yesterday, Sprint revealed some stats about phone sales on its network. Fared Adib, Sprint's vice president of product development, claimed that smartphones represented 50 percent of sales on the nation's number 3 carrier. Of those smartphones, 70 percent were Android models. Sprint's renewed agreement with Motorola looks to capitalize on this Android push, as the carrier will have 10 Motorola devices released by the end of this year, most of which will run Android.
