| RIM launching NFC capable BlackBerry devices this year Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:50 AM PST Jim Balsellie, co-CEO Research In Motion, said during a keynote presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that its company will offer NFC capabilities to many of its new smartphones launching this year. Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality enables users to use their mobile phones to make payments for things, such as train tickets and coupons, in a tap-and-go fashion. | HTC Incredible S to launch in Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy in the UK Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:45 AM PST One of HTC's latest Android smartphones, the Incredible S, will be offered by Best Buy and Carphone Warehouse in the UK and may launch as soon as this March. The Incredible S features a 4-in WVGA Super LCD display, an 8MP camera capable of recording 720p HD videos, and a forward facing 1.3MP camera for video chats. The ChaCha features a full QWERTY keyboard, below which is a button for dedicated Facebook access. This button allows users to quickly update their status, tell their friends what music they are listening to, or share their photos on Facebook, all with a single press. | Video: HTC Wildfire S live video demo from MWC Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:28 AM PST We've had our hands on the new HTC Wildfire S, HTC's latest compact Android Gingerbread Smartphone. The handset is very small and comes in three different colors: white, black, and purple. Crucially, the Wildfire S has received a new screen that is the same size as the original Wildfire's, but with double the resolution. This offers a much nicer visual experience, whilst making it easier to view photos taken with the 5 megapixel camera. The Wildfire S now packs a slightly faster 600MHz processor too, and has more RAM to make it run even smoother than before. Watch the video here. |

| Sprint to decide between WiMAX and LTE in 4 to 6 months Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:15 AM PST At a roundtable discussion in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress 2011 event, Sprint executives said that they will decide within the next 4 to 6 months on whether the company will stick with WiMAX for 4G or switch over to the better supported LTE standard. | Twitter branded smartphone denied by CEO Posted: 15 Feb 2011 11:49 AM PST While HTC and INQ are announcing phones with integrated Facebook support, Twitter CEO Dick Costello said that the company does not have a Twitter-branded smartphone in its future. Costello did go on to say he would like to see deeper integration of Twitter on smartphones and also told the press that forty percent of all tweets derive from mobile devices. | T-Mobile to allow NFC mobile payments in 2012 Posted: 15 Feb 2011 11:27 AM PST At Deutsche Telekom's press event at Mobile World Congress today, the parent company of T-Mobile USA stated that T-Mobile will soon offer mobile payment support for its customers. Using Near Field Communication (NFC), carriers can offer a payment system that allows customers to use their smartphones, instead of cash or credit, to make purchases. Deutsche Telekom says it will first roll out the payment system in Germany and Poland, with the U.S. to follow shortly thereafter in 2012. Read the full story here. |

| Google to merge Android smartphone and tablet platforms Posted: 15 Feb 2011 10:57 AM PST During a keynote at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Google CEO Eric Schmidt detailed the future of the Android Gingerbread 2.3 smartphone and Android 3.0 Gingerbread tablet platforms. Schmidt said that he expects the current Android Gingerbread 2.3 for smartphones and Android Honeycomb 3.0 operating systems to join together in the future. The Wildfire S will feature a 3.2-in display, with a 5MP camera, 600 MHz processor and is said to run on Android 2.3. The HTC ChaCha features a 2.6-in touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard, a 600 MHz processor, 5MP camera and apparently runs Android 2.3 with advanced social networking integration and a dedicated Facebook button to share photos with just a touch. | Nokia C5 smartphone for T-Mobile revealed by Bluetooth SIG Posted: 15 Feb 2011 06:38 AM PST Speculation has been swirling around a new Nokia phone hitting T-Mobile and now it looks like the rumors may be true. Despite Nokia's recent announcement of partnership with Microsoft to offer phones running its Windows Phone 7 operating system, the Bluetooth SIG has revealed an unannounced Symbian-powered Nokia C5-04 handset for T-Mobile USA. | Verizon adds Detroit to 4G LTE network Posted: 15 Feb 2011 05:40 AM PST This morning Verizon Wireless announced it will add Detroit to its expanding 4G LTE network starting February 17. Recently, Verizon placed its first Voice over LTE phone call. The LG Revolution smartphone was used for the call and offered simultaneous voice and data while on the LTE Verizon network. Verizon Wireless says its 4G LTE average data rates should be in the range of 5-12Mbps on the downlink and between 2Mbps and 5Mbps on the uplink in real-world network environments.
