| Google Gmail optimized for iPhone, iPod touch Posted: 28 Oct 2010 05:15 AM PDT Google has announced that its GMail.com client has been optimized for mobile Safari on the iPhone. Google says that iPhone users will notice that scrolling is snappier and should reflect the speed of which you swipe the screen. Toolbars will also now stay on the screen as you scroll down, which allows users to interact with them at any time. | Opera outs Opera Mini 5.1 browser for Symbian Posted: 28 Oct 2010 05:10 AM PDT Today Opera announced the latest mobile web browser for Symbian smartphones, Opera Mini 5.1. The browser offers support for a greater amount of devices, offers faster start-up time, has improved page load and scrolling performance, supports device text input methods, has improved fonts, and integrates copy and paste with the email client. Symbian users used to have to use a Java version of Opera Mini, however the latest version is designed to run on Symbian devices, and so should perform much better. | HTC Wildfire Android smartphone hitting U.S. in Q4 Posted: 28 Oct 2010 05:05 AM PDT Today HTC announced that its Wildfire, a compact Android 2.1 smartphone with HTC Sense, will land on American regional carriers in during the fourth quarter of this year. The HTC Wildfire has a 5 megapixel camera, a 523MHz processor, 802.11 b/g/ Wi-Fi, aGPS, and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. The phone launched in Europe during the third quarter of this year. | White iPhone 4 pulled from Apple Store Posted: 28 Oct 2010 04:50 AM PDT After a series of delays for the white version of Apple's iPhone 4, Apple appears to have pulled the device from its online store entirely, an odd move considering the device was just starting to pop up in its mobile Apple Store app. Apple used to show the device with a small tag saying that it wasn't yet available, however, the white iPhone 4 is no longer displayed. | Apple iPad now available from Verizon Wireless Posted: 28 Oct 2010 04:00 AM PDT On schedule, the Apple iPad tablet is now available for Verizon Wireless customers online and in stores nationwide. Verizon is selling three models of the iPad paired with its MiFi 2200 Hotspot device and is also selling the device by itself. | T-Mobile myTouch renamed myTouch 4G, landing November 3 for $199 Posted: 27 Oct 2010 03:16 PM PDT We just got back from a T-Mobile event where we had a chance to pick up our review units for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. T-Mobile told us that the device is now officially called the T-Mobile myTouch 4G (as opposed to just the myTouch) and that it will launch on November 3 for $199 with a 2-year T-Mobile contract. | Sony Ericsson delays Xperia X10 family Android 2.1 rollout again Posted: 27 Oct 2010 12:46 PM PDT Sony Ericsson has said that it is delaying the roll-out of its Android 2.1 update for the Xperia X10, X10 mini, and X10 mini pro yet again. This time it's a "couple of more weeks." Despite naming that time frame, Sony Ericsson did say the roll-out will begin at the end of October. The Android 2.1 roll-out schedule has changed many times. Sony Ericsson originally promised the update in Q3 2010, then it said September. Eventually it was pushed until "late October." Read the full story here. |
| Sprint to phase out iDEN network Posted: 27 Oct 2010 10:44 AM PDT In an interview with Fierce Wireless, Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse said that has plans to phase out its iDEN network to free up some space for its CDMA network. "Over time, we'll have fewer and fewer customers on the iDEN network. That allows us to use some of that capacity on the network that is freed up and use it for CMDA. It's a gradual process. There will be an end date for all 2G, just like there was an end date for 1G," Hesse said. There's speculation Sprint could use the freed 800MHz frequency spectrum to build out its CDMA 1X Advanced network for voice services. Read the full story here. |
| Apple iPad on sale tomorrow from Verizon Wireless Posted: 27 Oct 2010 08:43 AM PDT Verizon Wireless will start selling Apple's iPad tablet tomorrow in over 2,000 of its stores across the nation. Verizon is pairing up the iPad with its MiFi 2200 Mobile Hotspot for fast internet connectivity, but it can also be purchased as a stand alone device. Pricing starts at $629.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 16 GB + MiFi. The 32GB iPad with a MiFi is $729.99, and the 64GB iPad with a MiFi device will set you back $829.99. Verizon is also offering a special monthly plan for those that buy the iPad + MiFi, and that costs $20 per month for 1 GB of data. Read the full story here. |
