| Motorola intros MotoSpeak 2.0 dictation and text to speech software for Android Posted: 05 Oct 2010 07:34 PM PDT Today Motorola announced MotoSpeak 2.0, Motorola's latest technology for hands-free Bluetooth devices. MotoSpeak 2.0 reads text messages aloud to users, and also allows users to dictate responses through the headset. The headset can even announce the name of who is calling or texting. MotoSpeak 2.0 will be available beginning on October 12 for Android 2.2 handsets. It will be compatible with the Motorola Finiti, CommandOne, and Roadster Bluetooth devices. | Google asks court to toss Oracle patent infringement suit Posted: 05 Oct 2010 12:57 PM PDT On August 13 Oracle filed a lawsuit against Google in a U.S. District Court in Northern California. It said that Google infringed on seven patents and related copyrights, primarily related to its Android operating system. Google has asked the court to toss the lawsuit and "declare the patents in question invalid," according to The Wall Street Journal. "It's disappointing that after years of supporting open source, Oracle turned around to attack not just Android, but the entire open source Java community with vague software patent claims," a Google spokesman said. An Oracle spokesperson responded, stating, ""Google's infringement and fragmentation of Java code not only damages Oracle, it clearly harms consumers, developers and device manufacturers." Google Goggles is a new feature of the Google Mobile App for iPhone. To use it, simply tap the camera button while running the Google Mobile App, and Google Goggles will launch. Goggles can be used to identify objects and landmarks, Google search books and other items, and more. Currently the iPhone version is only available for English speaking users. | T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ XT to receive a firmware update Posted: 05 Oct 2010 09:40 AM PDT Today Motorola announced that a firmware update is being sent out to T-Mobile's Motorola CLIQ XT users. The update promises "significantly" improved performance and responsiveness, better stability, and an updated version of the Swype keyboard. The touchscreen response has also been improved, and Bluetooth performance has been tweaked. Motorola also says that some messaging bugs have been fixed. | Samsung sells 5 million Galaxy S smartphones globally, 2 million in U.S. Posted: 05 Oct 2010 06:34 AM PDT Today Samsung announced that NTT DOCOMO will begin selling its Android powered Galaxy S smartphone in Japan. In the release, Samsung also briefly noted that global sales of it Galaxy S smartphones have surpassed 5 million units. 2 million of those were to the U.S. market, and a million were sold in Korea. Both devices will launch with Android 2.2 and will support NTT DOCOMO's e-book service, which it plans to begin trailing in October. The Galaxy S and the Galaxy Tab will also support NTT DOCOMO's sp-mode service which provides access to i-mode mail accounts. The Galaxy S offers a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5 megapixel camera, a 1GHz processor, and Flash support. Users will need to use A/V component cables in order to connect their device to a television. Netflix for iOS allows users to stream Netflix content from their Instant Queue directly to their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Netflix added TV-out support to the iPad in May. | Nokia's head MeeGo exec resigns Posted: 05 Oct 2010 05:44 AM PDT Ari Jaaksi, a Nokia vice president who was in charge of leading the MeeGo device team, resigned from Nokia last week. Taloussanomat, a Finnish newspaper that first reported the story, said a Nokia spokesperson informed the paper that his resignation does not effect the current MeeGo roll-out schedule. Nokia has said that it plans to release its first MeeGo powered handset by the end of the year. Jaaksi isn't the first executive to leave the firm. Nokia's former CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, stepped down in September. Not long after that, another executive, Anssi Vanjoki, and the chairman of directors, Jorma Ollila, also stepped down. | Android Market updated with localized pricing Posted: 05 Oct 2010 05:25 AM PDT Google has updated its Android Market to include localized application pricing. That means that users will see the prices for applications listed in their home country currency. For example, applications published around the globe, when viewed in the United States, are priced in dollars. We just tested it ourselves and noticed apps that would originally have been priced in GBP or Euro now display an estimated dollar value based on the current currency rate.
