| Sony outs 16.41 megapixel camera sensors for phones Posted: 07 Oct 2010 04:56 AM PDT Sony has announced two new back-illuminated camera sensors for phones, including one capable of taking 16.41 megapixel pictures. Sony says the sensors, dubbed "Exmor R," offer high photographic performance with high sensitivity and low noise. They are also capable of shooting 1080p HD video. Sony will also launch two new lens modules, which it says are the smallest and thinnest available for mobile phones. The 16.41 megapixel sensor is set to ship in January 2011 and a 8.13 megapixel version will ship in April 2011. Read the full story here. |

| Verizon LTE phones to support simultaneous voice and data Posted: 06 Oct 2010 12:44 PM PDT While it might be an obvious thing to some of the engineers out there, Verizon seemingly today confirmed that when its 4G LTE based devices hit the market next year, users will be able to place voice calls and access wireless data at the same time. This is a competitive advantage that AT&T has been lording over Verizon this year in its television advertising campaigns. Starting next year, it seems, AT&T will have to find another banner to wave. | Wolfram|Alpha application launches for Android smartphones Posted: 06 Oct 2010 12:27 PM PDT Today Wolfram|Alpha, the computational knowledge search engine, launched an Android application in conjunction with the T-Mobile G2 launch. Wolfram|Alpha allows users to search by voice or text, and ask questions about math, science, engineering, health and nutrition, geography, economics, linguistics, people and history, sports, music, and more. I've personally used Wolfram|Alpha a great deal during the past few years and am a big fan of the service. | RIM outs AT&T BlackBerry Torch 9800 software update with performance improvements Posted: 06 Oct 2010 11:17 AM PDT Today RIM announced a new software update for the BlackBerry Torch 9800. The firmware, version 6.0.0.695, offers faster page loading and improved panning in the browser. It also handles user input more efficiently, resulting in improved responsiveness. RIM says that applications should load faster, and also switch and exit quicker. The home screen was improved with faster rendering and smoother transitions between panes, and thumbnails for photos should render quicker. The email and messaging apps were also improved with faster scrolling, and RIM says it improved the voice software for improved audio quality. | PayPal for iPhone now offers check deposit feature Posted: 06 Oct 2010 08:53 AM PDT Today PayPal announced that its iPhone application now supports a new feature called Mobile Check Capture. The feature lets customers simply snap a photo of a check to transfer it into their PayPal accounts. | HP webOS smartphones landing next year Posted: 06 Oct 2010 05:23 AM PDT Speaking to Reuters recently, HP senior vice president Eric Cador said that HP plans to release new webOS powered smartphones soon. "You will see us coming early next year with new phone," Cador said. While we expect HP to release some new phones, Cador's comment is in contrast to statements made by HP's former CEO, Mark Hurd, who said in June that HP "didn't buy Palm to be in the smartphone business." | Microsoft would work with Motorola on Windows Phone 7, CEO says Posted: 06 Oct 2010 05:15 AM PDT Despite filing a lawsuit against Motorola for copyright infringement, Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer says that Microsoft would be willing to collaborate with Motorola should Motorola decide to build Windows Phone 7 devices. "We are always excited to collaborate with anybody who wants to collaborate with us," Ballmer said.
