Marvell working on tri-core processor for smartphones and tablets

Chipmaker Marvell is said to be working on a new mobile processor called Armada 628. The tri-core chip offers lower power consumption than Marvell's current offerings, and will likely power smartphones and tablets.

Facebook and INQ may be creating phone for AT&T

The latest news on a potential Facebook branded phone surfaced today. According to Bloomberg, Facebook is working with INQ mobile on a device, which could launch in Europe during the first half of 2011, and in the U.S., on AT&T, during the second half of the year.

Report: Apple claims largest share of mobile industry profits

A new report from Canaccord Genuity and IDC shows that Apple rakes in the most profits within the mobile industry, despite selling a fewer phones than larger manufacturers such as LG, Nokia, and Samsung.

Dell 7-inch Android tablet hitting Best Buy soon

Today, during the Oracle World conference in San Francisco, Michael Dell showed off a new Dell Streak tablet. The device is powered by Android and has a 7-inch screen, which is larger than the original 5-inch Streak. Dell said the tablet will be available from Best Buy shortly.

Samsung Apps hits 10 million downloads in Europe

Today Samsung announced that its "Samsung Apps" store has surpassed 10 million downloads in Europe. It's currently available in 34 countries there, and is available in 109 countries globally. The top downloads are need for Speed Shift, Magic Torch, and My Mirror. The store originally launched in September 2009.

Sprint CEO: "We're not ruling out tiered pricing"

Sprint's CEO, Dan Hesse, recently said that Sprint doesn't currently have plans to move to a tiered pricing plan offering as other carriers, such as AT&T, have. However, Dow Jones Newswires, is reporting that Hesse said Sprint isn't ruling out metered pricing. "Tiered pricing is something we look at," he admitted, but noted that customers value the simplicity of the carrier's current unlimited plans.

Sprint releases HTC EVO 4G software update

Today Sprint announced a new update for its HTC EVO 4G Android smartphone. THe update, version 3.29.651.5, offers a fix for calendar event issues, and a fix for multiple Gmail account sync problems. To update your software, go to Menu > Settings > System Updates > HTC software update.

LG U.K. intros C300 Town QWERTY phone

Today LG announced the C300 Town for the U.K. The Town is a feature phone with a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.4-inch display. It's built to make it easy to access social networks, and has a handful of multimedia features, too.

Netflix Streaming now available in Canada

Netflix streaming is available on a host of devices, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, notebooks, and home entertainment products such as the Xbox 360 and various Blu-ray players. GPS fix hitting Samsung Captivate smartphone today

Today Samsung announced that it is rolling out an over-the-air GPS update for the Samsung Captivate. According to Samsung, "An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks." Samsung says it will also improve the media scanning time, and add QuickOffice as well as Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support. We are currently manually installing the update. To do this yourself, visit your device settings and check for an update.

BlackBerry Torch preorders begin on Vodafone U.K.

Today Vodafone U.K. launched a pre-order website for the BlackBerry Torch 9800. The Torch is free with monthly plans starting at £40 ($62.50). The Torch 9800 iffers a 5 megapixel camera, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen, and RIM's latest BlackBerry 6 operating system. HTC launching Windows Phone 7 smartphones next month

HTC is planning to announce phones running Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system next month."We will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets next month and we will be concentrating on Android and Windows segments," Mohammad Kais Zribi, HTC's regional manager for the Middle East, told Gulf News, adding that HTC plans to launch five more phones by the end of the year. An October announcement of new Windows phone 7 devices would be in-line with Microsoft's plan to release Windows Phone 7 devices in the U.S., and globally, by the Holiday season.

Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 hitting T-Mobile U.K. at end of month

T-Mobile U.K. has announced that it is planning to release an Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Samsung Galaxy S at the end of the month. The update will be deployed through Samsung's Kies PC application. Users with Linux or other operating systems not supported by Kies have been told to "ask a friend with a Windows PC" to install the update for you.

Survey: Nearly 50% of AT&T iPhone users would switch to Verizon

A survey conducted by Deloitte has found that nearly half of Apple iPhone owners on AT&T would defect over to Verizon Wireless should Verizon decide to offer the phone. AT&T's CEO refuted that data noting that nearly 80 percent of its iPhone customers are locked down in family plans.

Motorola DROID X Android 2.2 Froyo update available today

For those that missed the news, as of today Motorola DROID X users can update their smartphones to the latest version of the Android operating system, 2.2 Froyo. Users who don't wish to wait for the update to arrive on its own can start the process manually by going to the System menu on the DROID X and then selecting "About Phone" followed by "System Update."
