| Best Buy CEO says iPad cannibalizes notebook sales by 50 percent Posted: 17 Sep 2010 10:23 AM PDT Best Buy recently said that it will begin to sell Apple iPads in all of its 1,093 U.S. stores beginning on September 26, which will likely continue to hinder notebook sales in its stores. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Brian Dunn recently said that Apple iPad sales had "cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50 percent." "People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives," Dunn added, noting that he wants Best Buy to be a place where its customers can come see, and test, the "best of the connected world." The new site, located at verizonwireless.com/4G, offers an area to sign up for alerts on when its 4G network will launch, pricing, coverage, and more. | Qik video calling software coming to Android soon Posted: 17 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT Last night during Samsung's U.S. Galaxy Tab press event, executives demoed a version of Qik for Android that allowed two Galaxy Tab owners to video-chat with one another. According to PC Magazine, Qik's software is coming to other Android devices as well. Qik expects the application to hit the Android Market within a month, and it will only run on devices with an ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Samsung's Galaxy S line of smartphones, as well as other high-end Android devices on U.S. carriers meet that requirement. Read the full story here. |

| Facebook Places launches in U.K. Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:42 AM PDT Today Facebook announced that its Places feature is launching in the U.K. Places lets Facebook users on the iPhone, or those who access http://touch.facebook.com from a WebKit-based mobile browser, to check-in to various points of interest, such as restaurants. Places users can also view a "Who's here now" feature. For those that don't want to use the feature, there are a number of privacy controls available in Facebook's settings. | Apple iPad launches in China today Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:20 AM PDT The Apple iPad began retailing in China, on schedule, today. According to Apple Insider, crowds of over 100 people were lining up outside Apple's stores in Beijing to get their hands on the iOS 4 powered tablet. The 16GB model costs 3,988 CNY ($589), while the larger 32GB model is priced at 4,788 CNY ($708). The 64GB iPad costs CNY ($826). Apple is only selling the WiFi capable iPad right now, and the 3G + WiFi model is still listed as "coming soon." Read the full story here. |
