| Twitter launches T.co, its own URL shortening service Posted: 02 Sep 2010 04:45 AM PDT Today social networking site Twitter announced that it has launched its own URL shortening service, T.co, that will be integrated into its Twitter service. It appears that the service will not, at least initially, be available for use in non-Twitter applications. Services like these are used by people to create shorter URLs that are more friendly to mobile and take up less space in text messages and services like Twitter, which have limited message lengths. | Samsung focusing on Android and bada, sees only "specialized" demand for Windows Phone 7 Posted: 02 Sep 2010 04:18 AM PDT Reuters is quoting a Samsung exec as stating that "We are prioritizing our Android platform. Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it." The company is also focusing on its own platform, bada. The executive then goes on to talk briefly about Samsung's Windows Phone 7 devices, saying "There is still some professional, specialized demand there" and notes that there is no "visible demand" for Symbian products. Samsung has created a few Symbian S60 based smartphones in the past, but has had limited success in that market. Read the full story here. |
| Motorola DROID receiving second Froyo update, provides Flash 10.1 support Posted: 02 Sep 2010 04:13 AM PDT Yesterday a Motorola DROID in our office received a second Android 2.2 Froyo over the air firmware update, FRG22D. This latest update allows DROID users to download the Adobe Flash 10.1 browser plug-in from the Android Market, which is what we did. | Nokia shutting down Ovi Files service Posted: 02 Sep 2010 04:02 AM PDT Today Nokia announced that it is closing down its Ovi Files service. Ovi Files allowed mobile users to access files shared from their home computers while on the road. | Apple adds Ping social networking feature to iTunes 10, coming to iPhone in the future Posted: 01 Sep 2010 11:25 AM PDT While announcing version 10 of its iTunes store for Mac and Windows PC computers, Apple talked up a new music-centric social networking service that it has built into the application. The new service is called Ping, and it will allow users to follow the music related exploits of friends and stars alike, and will eventually be available on Apple iOS mobile devices. | Apple demonstrates iOS 4.2 for iPad, available in November Posted: 01 Sep 2010 10:51 AM PDT Today Apple CEO previewed version 4.2 of the Apple iOS operating system, which will be available for free to iPad users when it is released in November. In addition to the previously promised multi-tasking feature, Apple's Air Tunes streaming music system in iOS 4.2 has been renamed to Air Play to show that it works with videos and photos in addition to music, and a new wireless printing system called Print Center was also demonstrated. The new iPod touch uses the same 3.5-inch, 960 x 640 pixel Retina capacitive touchscreen as the iPhone 4, and will be available on next week for a price of $229, $299, and $399 for the 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB models, respectively. | Apple: 120 million iOS devices shipped, 230k iOS activations per day Posted: 01 Sep 2010 10:21 AM PDT Today at the Apple press event, company CEO Steve Jobs announced that there have been 120 million Apple iOS devices shipped since the original iPhone launch, and that there are 230,000 new iOS activations per day. Jobs also said that there have been 6.5 billion app downloads so far, and that 200 apps are downloaded per second, on average. | Boost Mobile offering $2 per day unlimited service Posted: 01 Sep 2010 07:54 AM PDT Today Boost Mobile announced a new $2 per day unlimited service that provides unlimited talk, messaging, email, and 411 calls. The $2 fee will be deducted from the customer's account at start of each day until the customer cancels the subscription. While this will provide some flexibility for those that need service only for short stretches at a time, it should be pointed out that on a monthly basis this is more expensive than Boost's current $50 unlimited offering. | China requiring ID for all mobile service purchases to prevent SMS spam Posted: 01 Sep 2010 07:42 AM PDT According to the China Daily newspaper, people in China are now required to provide personal identification when they purchase any sort of cell phone service, including pre-paid SIM cards that could previously be purchased anonymously with cash. The government claims this is to clamp down on SMS spam messages, but some human rights organizations believe it to be part of a pattern of restriction on new technologies. | Sony Ericsson CEO aiming for number 1 spot in Android smartphone business Posted: 01 Sep 2010 06:58 AM PDT At a briefing in Beijing, China today, Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg said that his company is aiming to be the largest distributor of Android based smartphones in the world. Nordberg said his company currently has a 17 percent market share of Android smartphones, and that the leader has 23 percent. He didn't specify when the company aims to take the number 1 spot. Orange claims that its new HD Voice system will provide business users with far clearer call audio that will help in normal business conversations as well as those taking place in noisy locations. | Motorola Mobility spin-off to get $3.5 billion in cash, plans NYSE listing Posted: 01 Sep 2010 06:27 AM PDT Motorola has said that when it spins off its mobile phone and set-top box unit as a separate company, it will seed it with $3.5 billion in cash to give it a financial cushion while it tries to regain its footing in the mobile space.
