Samsung says Galaxy Note sales have topped 5 million

Samsung has revealed that sales of the Galaxy Note, its smartphone-cum-tablet with S Pen powers, have topped 5 million units world wide. The company reached this mark in five months since the Note's debut in South Korea. It had previously hit 1 million sales in December and then 2 million at the beginning of March, so launches in other markets, especially the U.S. with AT&T's LTE edition of the Note, have accelerated sales. Speaking of the LTE Note, Samsung also plans to launch the LTE version of the Galaxy Note in Japan on April 6 with NTT DoCoMo.

UK and European Kindle Touch on sale April 27, pre-orders open now

Amazon has opened up its pre-orders for its Kindle Touch e-reader in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The Kindle Touch features a traditional e-ink display and offers a buttonless form factor for simple reading. The Kindle Touch is being offered in both Wi-Fi and 3G variants from Amazon and will go on sale starting April 27.

MetroPCS has 500,000 LTE customers, wants cheap LTE phones

MetroPCS has revealed that it now has over 500,000 users of its 4G LTE service. The carrier currently has about 9.34 million customers in total. MetroPCS also says that it is talking to manufacturers about developing 4G LTE phones that will be priced between $99 and $149 and that looks to launch such low-cost devices by the end of the year. MetroPCS's most recent LTE device is the LG Connect 4G, which sells for about $319.

Apple, Sony, others sued by Graphics Properties Holdings over alleged patent infringement

Apple, Sony, HTC, LG, Samsung, and RIM are being sued by Graphics Properties Holdings over alleged patent infringement with each company's respective mobile devices. This is the second time that Graphic Properties (formerly Silicon Graphics Inc.) has brought a lawsuit against Apple and the others. Last October, Graphics Properties filed a suit claiming that its patents covering mobile displays were infringed upon by a number of companies. It appears that the goal of the lawsuits is to coerce the phone makers into signing licensing agreements that would generate revenue for Graphics Properties. The most recent suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware.

T-Mobile slapped with NFC-related lawsuit

A lawsuit brought against T-Mobile by On Track Innovations (OTI) claims that the carrier infringed upon OTI's Near Field Communications (NFC) patents with a number of devices. The announcement of the suit did not specify which devices carried by T-Mobile were allegedly infringing upon the patents. OTI has partnered with companies such as MasterCard and Visa to develop NFC-based contactless payment systems in the past. The company produces a device that adds NFC capabilities to devices that don't otherwise have them. The demands of the lawsuit were not revealed, though OTI indicated that it would be willing to "leverage its IP assets" for monetary gain.

Sprint shuttering Picture Mail service by end of April

Sprint has announced that it is shutting down its oft-forgotten Picture Mail service at the end of April. Picture Mail is, as you might have guessed, a service for sending images from one Sprint user to another. With the proliferation of MMS, email, and other image sharing tools on mobile devices today, Picture Mail has become an antiquated service that many people no longer utilized. Users that have images stored in the Picture Mail service have until April 30 to download their pictures to their computers.

Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0 ICS update now available from O2
