HTC shutting down online backup service ahead of revamp

HTC has revealed that it is shutting down its HTCSense.com online backup service in preparation for a renovation that will bring new features to the service. As a result of the shutdown, user data stored on HTC's servers will be deleted, so those that utilized the service will want to retrieve their information before it goes dark.

Microsoft releases Windows Phone SDK 7.1.1 for developers

Microsoft has released the Windows Phone SDK 7.1.1 for developers to use. The updated SDK allows developers to create apps that work well on lower-spec devices that have 256MB of RAM instead of 512MB, such as the upcoming Nokia Lumia 610. It also offers compatibility with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, though Microsoft says it is not officially supporting the SDK on Windows 8 right now. Developers are able to download and install the updated SDK now.

MetroPCS delays launch of VoLTE service until later this year

MetroPCS has announced that it will not launch voice over LTE (VoLTE) service in Q1 as initially planned, but will deploy it in the second half of this year. VoLTE is a technology that lets carriers transmit voice calls in addition to data traffic over an LTE network.

Three UK to expand 42Mbps HSPA+ service tomorrow

According to a report from The Guardian, Three UK plans to announce further expansion of its 42Mbps HSPA+ network tomorrow. The carrier will be upgrading its current 21Mbps HSPA+ network to the higher speed service.

HTC Titan II 4G LTE Windows Phone arrives for AT&T on April 8

April 8 is shaping up to be a big day for AT&T and Windows Phone fans. Joining the already announced Nokia Lumia 900 on that date is the HTC Titan II, which will retail for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. The Titan II is an evolution of the Titan smartphone that was released last year, and it features a 4.7-inch WVGA display and all-new 16 megapixel camera - the highest resolution camera in any smartphone available in the U.S. The Titan II runs Windows Phone 7.5 and supports AT&T's 4G LTE network.

Angry Birds Space notches 10 million downloads in three days

Productivity must have been at an all-time low this weekend, as Rovio announced this morning that Angry Birds Space was downloaded over 10 million times in the span of three days since its launch on March 22. Angry Birds Space is the latest iteration of the immensely popular gaming franchise, and it takes everyone's favorite characters into the dark reaches of space, complete with new levels and physics to contend with. It is currently available for iOS and Android, and has been promised for Windows Phone in the future.

Microsoft, Nokia to put $24 million into app development for Windows Phone

Nokia and Microsoft have announced that each company will invest 9 million EUR (US$12 million) into a mobile application development program at Aalto University in Finland over the next three years. The new AppCampus program will focus on creating mobile apps for the Windows Phone ecosystem, but it will also produce apps for Nokia's S40 and Symbian-based phones. Students enrolled will be coached on commercialization of their ideas, and they will retain all of the intellectual property rights for the apps that they develop within AppCampus. The program starts in May and is expected to attract students and developers from around the world.

AT&T confirms Nokia Lumia 900 to arrive April 8 for $99.99

AT&T has confirmed earlier rumors that the Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone smartphone will arrive on April 8 for $99.99 when purchased with a new two-year contract. The Lumia 900 is the first 4G LTE Nokia smartphone, the first 4G LTE Windows Phone on the market, and it is also the first flagship Windows Phone Nokia to be carried by a U.S. carrier. It features a 4.3-inch, ClearBlack AMOLED display and is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor. The aggressive pricing for the Lumia 900 should help Nokia make a dent in the U.S. smartphone market, something that the company hasn't been able to do for a long time. Customers will be able to place pre-orders for the black or cyan versions online and in stores on March 30. The white version will arrive on April 22.

Apple to offer its nano-SIM design royalty-free if approved

Apple is in a bit of a battle with Nokia, RIM, and Motorola over the proposed standard for the next generation of SIM cards, commonly called nano-SIM. Apple has proposed a different design than the other manufacturers, but new evidence has sprung up that says that Apple will offer the design to other phone makers royalty-free if it is approved.
