Samsung, Toyota partner for in-car smartphone integration

Samsung has announced a partnership with car manufacturer Toyota that will see its smartphones integrated into the infotainment system of Toyota's cars and trucks. Dr. WP Hong, Executive Vice President at Samsung Mobile, said: "With a passion for innovation and a commitment to drive the advancement of the mobile and vehicle industry, Samsung looks forward to the shared success of this collaboration. Together, Samsung and Toyota are opening the door to the Smarter Car Era." The companies hope to finalize plans and commence commercialization in the second quarter of this year.

Apple's Siri to be offered in Mercedes-Benz vehicles

Apple's personal voice assistant Siri is soon expected to be offered in A-Class vehicles from luxury German car maker Mercedes-Benz. The new system will allow drivers to access their apps, messages, and calendars or make phone calls with a simple voice command through the car's speaker system. With the help of the Mercedes's Drive Kit Plus program, users will have a handsfree option to keep their eyes on the road while they keep up with their social media status with a simple voice command. The Siri-powered feature will debut at the 82nd International Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland, which runs March 8 to March 18.

Sprint to offer rugged Kyocera DuraPlus on March 11 for $70

Sprint has anounced that the DuraPlus by Kyocera will be available for purchase starting on March 11 for $69.99, with a qualifying contract. The DuraPlus is a rugged push-to-talk handset that offers a simple candy bar form factor. The DuraPlus supports all of Sprint's push-to-talk Direct Connect features, including GroupConnect and One-Touch Direct Connect. The phone ofers up to 9.5 hours of talk time with its standard battery, and has an extended 2300mAh battery available as an option.

T-Mobile confirms 4G LTE rollout, skipping 84Mbps HSPA+

T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it is no longer planning to follow through with its previously announced plans to deploy 84Mbps HSPA+ across its network and will instead go straight to LTE for its high speed data transmissions. T-Mobile's Android Sherrard said that the move to 84Mbps HSPA+ would have required refarming of its spectrum in a manner similar to what its LTE plans required, so it made sense to skip the faster HSPA+ deployment and move direct to LTE.

Samsung Galaxy S II now available from U.S. Cellular

The Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone is now available from U.S. Cellular. The Galaxy S II has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung's TouchWiz 4.0 interface and has an 8 megapixel camera. U.S. Cellular is offering the Galaxy S II online today for $229.99 with a new two-year agreement, and it will be available for purchase in stores tomorrow, March 1.

Mozilla has been talking about its Boot 2 Gecko mobile operating system for some time, but it hasn't shown it in off public until now at Mobile World Congress 2012. The Boot 2 Gecko OS is entirely open source and its interface is built with HTML5 and CSS web standards, making it extremely customizable.

Sprint TV app for iPhone now available

Sprint iPhone users can now catch up on TV programs while on the go, thanks to the new iOS version of Sprint TV. The app offers free live TV and VOD (video-on-demand) and includes stations like ABC, CBS NBC, ESPN, and The Disney Channel. The Sprint TV app is free and access to it is included with Sprint's Unlimited Everything data plan.

LG's Optimus 3D Max is a refreshed version of the Optimus 3D that it released last year. The Max is thinner and faster, and has a brighter display. LG has also developed a number of applications to make use of the dual camera array, such as a distance measuring tool and 3D video editor. The 3D Max has a 4.3-inch WVGA Nova display and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. LG plans to release the 3D Max in March in Korea and then globally later on in the year.

LightSquared CEO steps down after losing FCC battle

LightSquared CEO and executive president Sanjiv Ahuja has resigned. The troubled 4G network will now look for someone new to take the helm while it struggles with financials and ongoing regulatory difficulties. The company had hoped to launch a terrestrial 4G LTE network on the satellite spectrum that it owned, but problems with the network causing interference on neighboring GPS bands eventually led to the FCC denying the company permission to proceed with a commercial rollout. Chief Network Officer Doug Smith and Chief Financial Officer Marc Montagner have been named as interim co-chief operating officers while the company searches for a new CEO.

iPad trade-ins up tenfold on eBay in anticipation of iPad 3

Online auction house and retailer eBay has announced that it is seeing used Apple iPads being traded in to its Instant Sale service at a rate 10 times higher than it did during the same time last year. In anticipation of next week's rumored announcement of Apple's third generation tablet, consumers appear to be unloading their current devices in in order to financially prepare for their next big purchase. eBay said that more than 125,000 tablets have been offered as trade-in so far this month with Apple iPads making up 97.6% of that number.

Verizon to offer family data plans by mid-year

Fran Shammo, Verizon's chief technical officer, has said that he expects his company to offer shared family data plans by the middle of the year. Shammo stated that Verizon has been studying the issue for about a year and that it "is very important to us and it's also very important to our customers." Three UK plans to launch DC-HSPA 42Mbps data network this summer

Three UK has announced that it plans to launch DC-HSPA service ahead of its trials for LTE. DC-HSPA, as you might recall, is the technology in the HSPA version of the Nokia Lumia 900 that allows it to get up to 42Mbps download speeds. The Lumia 900 has the ability to use dual upload and download channels to speed up throughput. Three claims that the new DC-HSPA network will offer twice the real world speeds of its current HSPA+ network, which has a maximum theoretical limit of 21Mbps. This means that users can likely expect to see 20Mbps download speeds when the network is operational this summer. The carrier says it will offer the faster data service across all of the UK. It also plans to trail proper 4G LTE service over the next few months.

Hands-on with the LG Optimus Vu tablet phone

LG announced the Optimus Vu, its answer to the Samsung Galaxy Note, at Mobile World Congress 2012. The Vu features a large 5-inch display, but it has an awkward 4:3 aspect ratio that makes it a bit difficult to handle. We swung by the LG booth at the show to get a closer look.
