Google releases updated Search app for Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones

Google has released an updated and redesigned version of its Search app for Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones. The new app includes auto-complete when searching, voice search, and My Location to search for nearby places. Google Search is free and available in the Windows Phone Marketplace now.

iOS 5.1 update changes "3G" indicator to "4G" on iPhone 4S for AT&T

AT&T has been wanting Apple to call the iPhone 4S a 4G device since it came out last fall with support for HSPA+ 14.4Mbps connections, and it seems that AT&T has finally won out: the new iOS 5.1 update changes the cellular data indicator from 3G to 4G on AT&T's iPhone 4S. Don't be fooled - the iPhone 4S is not capable of any faster speeds than before, it just has a fancy new name for its old data connection. Now that both AT&T and Apple have actually released a true 4G LTE device in the new, third-generation iPad, this is something that will surely cause confusion for users, as many will likely now believe their iPhone 4S is a 4G device. Apple iTunes 10.6 now available

Along with Apple's update to iOS today, the company has also released a new version of iTunes. The new application, iTunes 10.6, brings support for the high-res 1080p movies that will now be offered from the iTunes movie library. Other additions include an improved iTunes Match service that will offer better song matching and improved artwork handling, downloading, and display. Apple's iPhoto for iOS app puts the new iPad's resolution to work

Along with the announcement of the new iPad with a Retina Display and 4G LTE connectivity, Apple also unveiled the new iPhoto for iOS app, completing the suit of iLife apps for Apple's mobile platform. The new iPhoto app allows photographers to edit and share their photos with easy to use gestures and tools.

iOS 5.1 now available for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

As expected, Apple has made version 5.1 of its iOS mobile operating system available to download on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The new version adds support for Japanese in the Siri virtual assistant on the iPhone 4S, as well as a persistent camera shortcut on the lock screen. It is also now possible to delete images from the Photo Stream, and the camera face detection feature has been updated to show all faces that it recognizes. Apple says that other tweaks and bugs fixes have been included, including those that affect battery life. Finally, iOS 5.1 includes the new camera app for the iPad. The new update can be downloaded now from the Software Update option in the Settings app.

Apple knocks $100 off base model iPad 2 tablets

As part of its event for the "new" iPad, Apple has said that it will now offer the 16GB version of the older iPad 2 model for $100 off the original price. This means that a 16GB iPad 2 can be had for $399 in a Wi-Fi only configuration, or for $529 with 3G connectivity built-in. Apple made no indication that the 32GB and 64GB versions of the Wi-Fi and 3G models of the iPad 2 would see similar price reductions, or whether they would be phased out of production or not.

Readability app comes to Android next week

After releasing an app for the iPhone and iPad, read it later service Readability has announced that it is releasing a version of its application for Android next week. The new Android Readability app will allow Android smartphone and tablet users to add stories to their queue and read them while on the go. Readability claims that the new app will have "a level of polish rarely seen on the platform," and that it will "stand tall among Android apps." You can expect to see it hit the Android Market, er, Google Play Store for Apps for free next Monday, March 12, 2012.

Apple sells 15 million iPads in Q4, passes by conventional PC manufacturers

At its San Francisco event today, during which it is expected to announced the third generation of its iPad tablet, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that Apple sold nearly 15.5 million iPad tablets during the fourth quarter of 2011. He boasted that such a figure means that Apple sold more tablets in Q4 than any personal computer manufacturer sold in its entire line-up. Cook went on to say that his company has sold over 55 million iPads since the initial iPad tablet was introduced back in 2010.

Sprint to back out of deal with LightSquared

According to Bloomberg, Sprint is likely to back out of its deal with LightSquared as a consequence of LightSquared not gaining government approval for its proposed 4G LTE network. The two companies had signed a multi-year agreement worth billions of dollars to share network resources, but it was all contingent on LightSquared actually launching its network.

Microsoft to add location awareness icon to Windows Phone 7.5

Microsoft has revealed that it will add an icon to the top notification bar of the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system that will inform users as to when an app is obtaining their location. Both iOS and Android have a similar notification icon that appears whenever an app prompts the phone to turn on its GPS services and get its location. Microsoft says that the new icon will be pre-installed on devices that ship with Windows Phone Tango, and will arrive as part of the Tango update for existing phones once that starts rolling out. The Tango upgrade also includes support for lower-spec devices and other platform improvements.

Apple's next iPad rumored to have revolutionary tactile technology

Apple's next iPad, expected to be announced later today, may come with some revolutionary touchscreen technology, if a report from Pocket-lint is to be believed. Pocket-lint spent some time at Mobile World Congress with Senseg, a maker of haptic touchscreen technology that gives flat displays a textured feel, and was able to suss out some comments that leads them to believe Senseg worked with Apple on its latest tablet.
