Motorola MOTOLUXE smartphone arrives for T-Mobile UK

T-Mobile UK has announced that it is now offering the Motorola MOTOLUXE, a 4-inch Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone with a unique notification light below the display. T-Mobile subscribers can pick up the MOTOLUXE today for free with a 24-month contract and a minimum 21GBP per month plan.

Microsoft to shutter Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace on May 9

Microsoft has revealed that it will shut down the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace on May 9 of this year. The Windows Mobile (not Windows Phone) Marketplace stopped accepting app submissions back in May of 2011, but soon users won't be able to access the market or download apps from it. Apps that have already been installed will continue to work, and it will continue to be possible to download apps from outside of the Marketplace through third party app distributors.

Android 4.0 ICS upgrade arriving for ARCHOS G9 tablets

ARCHOS has announced that the promised Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the 80 G9 and 101 G9 tablets is now being delivered over-the-air to owners. The update upgrades the tablets to Android 4.0.3, and includes full 1080p support for most video codecs, automatic download of movies and TV show descriptions and subtitles, and wireless content sharing between devices. The tablets also have an optimized file manager with drag and drop support, ethernet USB dongle support, and the ARCHOS remote control app that lets you control the tablet with another Android device. Owners should see a notification on their tablets when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

New iPad said to pack twice as many backlight LEDs as iPad 2

According to research firm NPD, Apple's new iPad packs at least twice as many LED lights for backlighting as the iPad 2, which contained 36. NPD says that the greater quantity of LEDs is needed to accommodate the higher resolution Retina Display.

Verizon offers mobile hotspot with LTE iPad; AT&T still mulling it over

Verizon Wireless has revealed that it will include mobile hotspot functionality at no additional cost with all of its 4G LTE plans for the new Apple iPad. Verizon's iPad plans start at $20 per month for 1GB of data, and go up to $80 per month for 10GB of data. Comparatively, AT&T's LTE plans for the new iPad start at $15 per month for 250MB of data, and go up to $50 per month for 5GB. AT&T is not currently offering mobile hotspot functionality with any of its iPad plans, but the carrier says that it is working with Apple to enable it in the future. It is not clear if AT&T plans to charge more for mobile hotspot use when it does add it to the plan options, however.

C Spire to launch 4G LTE services in Mississippi this September

Regional carrier C Spire (née Cellular South) has revealed plans to launch 4G LTE service in various markets in Mississippi this fall. C Spire says that it will offer LTE service in 20 markets covering 1.2 million residents and 2,700 square miles. The markets to get LTE include the Jackson metropolitan area; the Mississippi Gulf Coast; South Mississippi: the cities of Brookhaven, Columbia, Natchez, Petal, Hattiesburg, McComb and Lucedale; North Mississippi: the cities of Oxford, Tupelo, Corinth, New Albany, Pontotoc, Booneville, Starkville, Columbus and West Point; the Mississippi Delta, the cities of Yazoo City, Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood and Clarksdale; and East Mississippi: the city of Meridian and parts of Lauderdale County. The new 4G services are set to go live in September, and C Spire promises that, over time, more markets will be added to its LTE footprint.

Rovio has revealed that Angry Birds Space, the next iteration of the ubiquitous Angry Birds franchise, will be available come March 22. Angry Birds Space takes the bird-flinging and pig-popping adventure out of the Earth's atmosphere and incorporates some new gameplay mechanics for the gravity-free reaches of outer space.

Apple, publishers may face lawsuit from U.S. government over e-book price fixing

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Department of Justice has warned Apple and five book publishers that it plans to sue for alleged price fixing of e-books. The DoJ says that Apple and the book publishers colluded to artificially raise the prices of e-books that are sold in the Apple iTunes Store.

Low-end Windows Phone devices to lack certain platform features

During Mobile World Congress 2012, Microsoft announced an update to its Windows Phone operating system that will allow for devices with lower-end specifications than existing versions of Windows Phone. Microsoft has now revealed details about the limitations that these new low-end devices will have due to their lower-spec hardware.

U.S. now home to 100 million smartphone users, says new report

According to comScore's latest report on the U.S. mobile phone industry, there are now more than 100 million smartphones in use in the country. This is a 13 percent jump from where the number stood back in October, 2011, and demonstrates the continued demand for smartphones from the American public.

Third-generation iPad features Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity

Apple may have been focused on the new Retina Display and improved graphics of the new iPad during its announcement yesterday, but it also turns out that, like the iPhone 4S, the third-generation iPad features support for Bluetooth 4.0 technology.
