Dual-core T-Mobile G2x Android smartphone now available

T-Mobile's next-generation powerhouse, the G2x, is now available for purchase in stores and online. The G2x is built by LG and sports a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor from NVIDIA and a 4-inch touchscreen. It is running a stock version of Android 2.2 Froyo without any customizations by T-Mobile or LG. Equipped with an 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera, the G2x is capable of recording 1080p (1920 x 1080) video. It also has an HDMI-out port and supports DLNA wireless streaming to share those hi-def videos. The G2x costs $199.99 after rebate with a new two-year agreement and requires a minimum $10 per month data plan.

Skype for Android updated with 3G calling for the U.S.

Skype has updated its Android app to include VoIP calling over 3G in the U.S. Previously, U.S. users could only place calls when connected to a Wi-Fi network. International users have been able to make calls over a cellular connection since the app was originally launched last year. Verizon Wireless has had a modified version of the Skype Mobile application that would allow users to place calls over its 3G network for some time. However, the modified app would still use voice minutes from a calling plan. The updated version allows for standard VoIP calls over 3G, without using any calling plan minutes. Skype for Android is free and available in the Android Market now, requires Skype account for use.

Toshiba introduces Regza AT300 Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet

Toshiba has officially taken the wraps off of the 10.1-inch Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet that it was showing off at CES earlier this year. The Regza AT300 has a dual-core Tegra 2 processor from NVIDIA and a full 1GB of RAM.

Samsung Focus, LG Quantum get NoDo update today

The NoDo update for Windows Phone 7 that adds copy and paste and other enhancements is available for the LG Quantum and the Samsung Focus today. Users should receive notifications on their handsets alerting them of the update. They will then have to plug their phones into a computer and install the update through Microsoft's Zune software. The HTC Surround for AT&T still has yet to receive the NoDo update.

Motorola Droid Bionic not scrapped, coming later this year

Rumors had been circulating that the Motorola Droid Bionic, one of the four next-generation Android smartphones shown off by Verizon Wireless at CES this year, was canceled and possibly replaced with another model. Motorola has said that the phone is still planned to be released, but later on this summer. Originally anticipated to be released in the second quarter, Motorola pushed back the launch in order to add more features to the phone. "Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience," said Motorola. The Droid Bionic shown off at CES was powered by a dual-core processor and had a 4.3-inch touchscreen. It was also capable of running on Verizon's 4G LTE network. We will have to wait until this summer to see what changes Motorola has made to the device before launch.

AT&T responds to BlackBerry Bridge unavailability

AT&T has responded via email to our inquiry as to the availability of the BlackBerry Bridge app for BlackBerry smartphones to connect to the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The carrier has stated that it has just received the application for testing and wants to ensure it will deliver a quality experience for its customers before releasing it to the public. No date was given as to when it will be available. Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile customers all currently have access to the Bridge application.

Verizon adding 4G LTE in 6 new markets on April 21

Today Verizon Wireless announced a number of new markets that will be added to its LTE-based 4G network on April 21. In Pennsylvania, LTE is being rolled out in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and the Lehigh Valley Airport. South Carolina will see the new network available in Columbia and Hilton Head, while North Carolina will get 4G speeds in Wilmington. Lastly, Clarksville and Cleveland in Tennesee are also getting access to Verizon's speedy 4G LTE network, which promises download speeds in the 5 to 12Mbps range.

Tablet business to grow to $49 billion in 2015, Apple iPad leading the way

Sprint in talks to share network with LightSquared, Clearwire

According to sources quoted by the Wall Street Journal, Sprint is in late-stages talks with Clearwire and LightSquared about network sharing agreements. The agreements would allow the smaller carriers to expand their footprints without having to build networks of their own, while giving Sprint a new source of revenue and access to more spectrum.

Ancestry.com iPhone, iPad app hits a million downloads

Ancestry.com's mobile app for the iPhone and iPad has hit the million download milestone. The family lineage website claims that one-third of those downloads happened within the last two months. More than half the users that have downloaded the app were new to Ancestry.com, which means the services gained over 500,000 new subscribers just from the iPhone and iPad apps. Ancestry.com for the iPhone and iPad is free in the iTunes App Store. It requires an Ancestry.com account for use.

Samsung Galaxy S Gingerbread update halted by Google

Vodafone has released a statement claiming that Google has halted the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone that was recently released to European users. The reason was unspecified, but Vodafone did say that other European carriers are affected by the action as well. No word on when the update will be available again, but Samsung and Vodafone claim to be working hard to resolve it.

Samsung intends to release 2GHz dual-core smartphone processor

According to South Korean search engine Daum, Samsung has plans to release a dual-core smartphone processor clocked at a full 2GHz per core by 2012. A processor of this capacity would narrow the gap between mobile devices and a full desktop PC.

TI introduces smallest wireless charging chip ever

Texas Instruments has announced a new wireless power receiver chip that is 80 percent smaller than its predecessor. The new chip is Qi-complaint, so it maintains the wireless charging standards that are already in existence.

Gmail for mobile browsers updated with undo option

Google has updated the Gmail webapp for Android smartphones and the iPhone with a new undo function. The webapp will now allow users to undo an action such as archive, delete, add or remove a label, or move a message/conversation. A small bar at the bottom of the screen will appear for a few seconds giving the user the ability to step back from whatever they did. While one can always move messages around through the folder tree at a later time, this new undo option streamlines the process and makes correcting mistakes easier when on the go. The new Gmail webapp is accessible to the iPhone and Android smartphones in the browser by going to gmail.com.
