Google distributes NFC stickers to businesses in Austin, TX

Google has begun distributing stickers with near field communication (NFC) technology to businesses throughout Austin, Texas as part of its Google Places roll out. The stickers allow users to tap their NFC-equipped phone on the sticker and access content and information relevant to the local business.

T-Mobile's dual-core G2x smartphone by LG now available

T-Mobile's G2x dual-core Android smartphone is available for purchase today. The G2x is a near exact copy of LG's Optimus 2X, the first dual-core smartphone to hit the market. The T-Mobile G2x features a 4-inch WVGA resolution touchscreen, support for T-Mobile's HSPA+ data network, and the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. The T-Mobile Sidekick 4G is a resurrection of the Sidekick brand for T-Mobile. It is built by Samsung and has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 5-row hardware keyboard, and a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. The software is a customized version of Android 2.2 Froyo that has a lot of messaging features built-in.

Samsung briefly leaks Replenish Android QWERTY smartphone for Sprint

According to Phone Scoop, Samsung recently posted an information page about an upcoming QWERTY keyboard-equipped Android smartphone called the M850 Replenish that is made up largely of recycled materials. Though no carrier was mentioned on the page, which has since been removed from the site, it seems likely that the device is headed to Sprint based on information revealed by the FCC earlier and Sprint's history of offering eco-friendly devices. According to the specs that were listed on the site, the Replenish sports a 2.8-inch portrait mode, QVGA-resolution touchscreen display and features Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity. CDMA iPhone worth $9 billion according to analyst

According to JP Morgan Research analyst Mark Moskowitz, the CDMA version of Apple's iPhone, which is sold on Verizon Wireless, will be worth $9 billion in revenue by 2012. He estimates that 10 million iPhones will be sold by the carrier in 2012, accounting for $6 billion in revenue. The remaining $3 billion is expected to come from overseas markets such as India. Verizon has not released any sales figures for the iPhone 4, which it started carrying in February, but those are expected to be revealed on April 20 during Verizon's quarterly earnings review.

BestBuy to expand mobile, online footprint

Currently, Best Buy is the largest consumer electronics chain in the U.S., but the powerhouse retailer is under pressure from investors after three straight quarters of same-store sales declines and a forecast for a fall in same-store sales in the current quarter. The main reason for this decline could be Best Buy's struggling television business. In any case, Best Buy has said its plans include 600 to 800 new Best Buy Mobile stand-alone stores in the U.S. over the course of the next five years.

Apple's iOS strikes back against Android dominance: report

Today, mobile ad platform Millennial Media released its Mobile Mix report for March, seeing the iPhone grow 17 percent month-over-month and iOS grow 11 percent month-over-month. Apple's iPad may exceed sales forecast by 15 million units: analyst

Apple's recorded iPad sales for 2011 may exceed even our highest expectations, as analysts have seen an indication from overseas component suppliers that Apple may sell 45 million iPad tablets this year. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White has been in China and Taiwan on a tech trip for about a week, and through meetings with component suppliers, sources have indicated that they expect to see Apple sell between 40 million and 45 million pads throughout 2011.

Angry Birds gets cross-platform syncing; never start over again

Rovio, creator of the hit sensation Angry Birds, today announced via tweet that the company has plans to sync its Angry Birds app across all platforms. This means that when you download the app using your personal ID, whether it be an Apple ID for your iPhone or your Gmail account for Android devices, you can switch to a new phone without having to start the game from scratch. The tweet said, "across all platforms is the plan, pretty big project, but getting there." While Rovio is right, cross-platform game syncing is quite a big project indeed, the company also says that it is "getting there," so maybe we'll see it soon.

HTC's Sense 3.0 only for EVO 3D, Sensation 4G, Flyer

In response to a tweet, HTC has confirmed that the newest version of its user interface, Sense 3.0, has hardware requirements that prevent its use on devices that are already on the market. However, HTC's Sense 3.0, which features an upgraded weather app, a new lock screen, and carousel-style scrolling action on the home screen, will be present on the EVO 3D, the Sensation 4G, and the View 3D Flyer tablet.

HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.3 Gingerbread update expected this summer

For a while now, owners of the HTC Droid Incredible have been patiently awaiting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the freshest version of Android for smartphones. Unfortunately, we don't have an exact date to appease their frustration. We do, however, have a ray of hope for Droid Incredible owners in the form of an email. "I understand your concern about wanting to know when the Android 2.3 upgrade will be released for the HTC Incredible. I'm pleased to inform you that there is going to be an update this summer to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)," stated the email. Since this was an email to a consumer, and didn't come from HTC PR, you have to consider that this report could still be false.

AT&T transitions more mid-west markets from Alltel

AT&T has announced that the carrier has completed the network preparations and transition of former Alltel networks in the mid-west over to its own network. AT&T inherited a handful of Alltel markets that Verizon Wireless agreed to divest when it purchased Alltel back in 2009. AT&T is offering former Alltel customers a free phone that is comparable to their Alltel one and is allowing them to keep their existing rate plans without signing a new contract. AT&T has also rebranded all of the Alltel stores with its own logos. The markets that have recently been absorbed include Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
