Verizon, MetroPCS FCC Net Neutrality challenges tossed

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 01:13 PM PDT

The lawsuits filed by wireless carriers Verizon Wireless and MetroPCS challenging the FCC's new net neutrality rules have been tossed out by the federal appeals court. The court says that the lawsuits were filed too early and were invalid. The companies had filed the suits before the new rules had been formally published, which is a no-no. The complaints in the suits stemmed from rules that prevented internet providers from intentionally slowing or controlling traffic based on content. We expect that both companies will re-file the lawsuits once the rules have been officially published.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY for Verizon hits FCC, SIM slot in tow

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 10:21 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson's gaming-centric smartphone, the Xperia PLAY, will be headed to Verizon Wireless in the near future. The phone recently passed through the FCC for certification with a surprise SIM card slot being revealed. Verizon's traditional CDMA network does not utilize SIM cards, so the slot can mean one of two things: the PLAY has 4G LTE capability, or it is a global-capable phone that can roam on GSM networks worldwide. We are leaning towards it meaning the latter, since LTE capability would have been a big point to mention in Sony Ericsson's marketing campaigns. We should find out soon enough though.

Apple patent application reveals 3D iPhone intentions

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:35 AM PDT

Apple has jumped on the 3D bandwagon, it would seem, as a patent application from Apple recently revealed possible plans to include 3D picture-taking capabilities on the iPhone. The filing describes a system that will capture, process, and render 3D images through the use of dual-camera hardware. According to the patent filing, Apple's approach to 3D imaging will be markedly different than current "software-based approaches" that must "guess" at how to perform stereo disparity compensation for 3D images. Instead, Apple's plan is to take a hardware-based approach, allowing for "deterministic calculation for stereo disparity compensation." Along with still 3D images, Apple's outlined system would also have 3D video-recording capabilities, which, according to the application, should only require a simple, one-time calibration of the system.

GameStop plans to stream games to tablets; perhaps develop one

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:01 AM PDT

Game retailer GameStop recently announced plans to stream games to tablets and other large-screen mobile devices. The company plans to let users sign up with GameStop's rewards program to stream games, which is a similar strategy to the one that led to the demise of entertainment giants Blockbuster and Tower Records. The announcement came after GameStop purchased Spawn Labs, a company that will take over the logistics of GameStop's potential cloud gaming service. GameStop also mentioned plans to begin selling tablets in its retail locations, should the cloud gaming services initiative run as smoothly as planned. Even more interestingly, the new-and-used vendor hinted at the development of its own tablet. There may be bumpy roads ahead, as the tablet race has already begun and front-runner Apple has an ever-growing lead. If GameStop focuses on a gaming-centric tablet, similar to Sony Ericsson's Xperia PLAY smartphone, it might have a shot.
