Android Trojan horse may make platform's "openness" embarrassing

Google's "open" philosophy for the Android platform may be under some extra scrutiny, after the appearance of a new Trojan horse in unofficial app stores made fools out of a few Android users recently. The app is called Android.Walkinwat, a free, pirated version of the Android Market-approved Walk and Text paid application.

Here we take a look at the new Apple iPad 2, in its Verizon Wireless 3G built. The iPad 2 features a thinner design with a new dual-core processor and a pair of cameras for use with Apple's popular FaceTime video chat application. We look at the iPad 2 itself and compare it a bit with the original as well as the Motorola XOOM.

Kyocera Echo smartphone pre-orders open at RadioShack

RadioShack has opened up pre-orders for Kyocera's dual-screen Android smartphone, the Echo on Sprint. The Echo has two 3.5-inch touchscreens that can be arranged side-by-side to make one large screen. RadioShack is selling the phone for the same price as Sprint, $199.99, with pre-orders shipping April 17. Head on over to RadioShack's website for info or to submit a pre-order. American Airlines launches Android sweepstakes in wake of app debut

American Airlines has today announced the launch of its Mobile Million Sweepstakes for Android. In celebration of the company's newly released Android app, the sweepstakes will offer one lucky winner 1 million American Airlines AAdvantage miles. For a little perspective, that's fairly equal to four trips around the planet. To enter, just download the American Airlines app on the Android Market, and fill out the sweepstakes entry form. As if 1 million miles weren't enough, American Airlines is giving away one Nook Color for every day of the month-long contest. The contest started yesterday and runs to April 28. Dell Venue Pro WP7 smartphone updates made official

Although we reported that it arrived two days ago, Dell has come out and made the updates for its Venue Pro Windows Phone 7 smartphone official. The first update, which is available now, is the NoDo update for WP7 that enables copy and paste and delivers other improvements. Dell will also be releasing an update for the phone itself that addresses some bugs and adds additional enhancements. There were no other details given regarding that update and a release date has not been announced.

ThunderBolt outselling iPhone at Verizon according to analyst

According to BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk, HTC's 4G LTE-powered Android smartphone, the ThunderBolt, is outselling Apple's iPhone at Verizon Wireless locations. The analyst and his staff called 150 Verizon Wireless locations across the country and 61 percent reported that the ThunderBolt and the iPhone were selling at the same rate, 11 percent said the iPhone was selling higher, and 28 percent claimed the ThunderBolt was outpacing the iPhone. Verizon and HTC have yet to release any hard sales figures, so this anecdotal evidence cannot be backed up. However, it does show that there is considerable interest in HTC's 4.3-inch powerhouse. Cricket today announced the availability of Muve Music in Colorado Springs, Ft. Collins, Greeley, and Pueblo (CO), Philadelphia (PA), Atlantic City (NJ), Wilmington (DE), Houston, Beaumont, Austin, and Bryan-College Station (TX), and Lake Charles (LA). For those unfamiliar with Cricket, Muve Music is a $55/month plan that offers unlimited voice, text, web, and video, along with unlimited music downloads to subscribers' mobile phones. The Muve Music library features artists from the four major music companies: Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI Music. Included with the Muve Music plan's unlimited music downloads are unlimited ringtones and ringback tones.

Amazon Appstore offers WeatherBug Elite app for free today only

Amazon is switching up its focus for today's free app, after offering a number of gaming apps earlier this week. Today, Android users can download the WeatherBug Elite app from the Amazon Appstore for Android for free. The WeatherBug Elite app automatically detects the user's location, or lets the user select one, before offering a detailed outline of today's conditions along with an extended five-day forecast. Within the app, users can check out Doppler radar through the Map feature, and even take a look at weather pictures using the Camera feature. Anyone who hasn't already chosen a favorite weather app should definitely check out WeatherBug Elite.

Ovi Maps 3.06 for Symbian now available

Nokia has released the final version of its Ovi Maps 3.06 navigation app to the Ovi Store. This update replaces its beta version and adds social check-ins and live traffic services. Symbian users can head over to the Ovi Store on their phones and download the new version now.

iPad 2 sales numbers revealed by eBay; 16GB Wi-Fi model most popular

Since its March launch, we've been waiting patiently for numbers to come in regarding iPad 2 sales, until eBay let us take a peek at a two-week period of iPad 2 buying activity on its U.S. site. We weren't surprised to find out the ultra-popular tablet sold quickly on the online retailer's site, hitting just under 12,000 sales in the two weeks of the iPad 2's exclusive U.S. availability.

Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi available from Cellular South today

Following last week's announcement that Cellular South would be carrying the Motorola XOOM, the carrier has made the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet available for purchase today. The regional carrier will be selling the Wi-Fi version of the XOOM for $599 on a two-year agreement. Bundled with the tablet is a free Novatel MiFi 2200 wireless hotspot for 3G connectivity to Cellular South's network. Plans for cellular network in London Tube nixed

Carriers in the UK have canceled their plans to build a cellular network in the London Tube underground. The plans were to have the network running by the Olympics, but the logistics of deploying it in the underground tunnels have been too difficult to overcome in the short time they have left.

TWC concedes to Fox and Co. in iPad app squabble

WiMAX Mobile 2 802.16m standard approved by IEEE

The 802.16m standard, an update to the 802.16 standard for WiMAX, has been approved by the IEEE board. 802.16m, or WiMAX Mobile 2, will allow for speeds of up to 100Mbps, similar to the capabilities of LTE Advanced. Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY Android gaming phone now available

Sony Ericsson's Xperia PLAY gaming smartphone officially launches today. Hitting shops in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the PLAY will also release in an additional 6 markets over the next 2 weeks. The world's first PlayStation certified phone will have over 60 games available in the first week, as well as the capability to download original PlayStation titles exclusively. The US version of the PLAY will be coming out later this spring for Verizon Wireless. Customers in the UK may also have to wait a little longer to get theirs if the reports from this week come true. iPad to get full Photoshop app from Adobe

Photographers can rejoice as Adobe has shown off what it plans to release as Photoshop for the iPad tablet. This version of Photoshop, not to be confused with the simpler Photoshop Elements app already available for the iPad, will support many more professional level features, including the must-have layers. While it obviously won't be as powerful as Photoshop on a laptop or desktop computer, having support for layers shows that Adobe is targeting the professional on the go. Adobe has yet to announce release dates, pricing, or a full list of features, but we are excited to see what it has coming down pipeline.

Facebook announces new version of mobile site, adapts for all

Facebook has announced a new version of its mobile site, m.facebook.com, that will automatically detect the type of mobile device being used and adapt the page accordingly. This allows the social networking giant to easily add features and updates to the page without having to rewrite it for every type of phone that may view the page.
