U.S. terror alert system will use Facebook, Twitter

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 10:15 AM PDT

According to a draft Homeland Security Department plan, the U.S. government has decided to bring Twitter and Facebook into the mix, as it replaces the old five-color National Terrorism Advisory System with a two-level warning system - elevated and imminent. As it is now, we don't hear about every terror threat in the news, as public awareness may risk exposing government intelligence. The revamped system maintains that standard, despite the implementation of social networking, according to the government's confidential plan. The 19-page plan outlines the entire process of distributing terror alerts, first notifying members of Congress, then counter-terrorism officials, then governors and mayors, and finally, reaching the public. Expected to be in place by April 27, the plan specifies that Twitter and Facebook are to be used "when appropriate," and only after federal, state, and local government leaders have been notified.

The FCC says that these rules will drive competition in a market increasingly dominated by two large carriers (AT&T and Verizon Wireless).

It's a landmark day for Opera Software as the company saw 100 million monthly users of Opera Mini in March, and two billion daily page views on the mobile browser. This time around, Opera Mini has stolen the show, rocketing ahead with 100 million monthly users all to itself.

Samsung Electronics expecting weaker Q1 earnings report

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 07:22 AM PDT

It appears that Samsung Electronics is having a bit of a tough time this quarter, having said today that it expects its overall Q1 2011 earnings to fall to between 2.7 trillion SKW (US$2.5 billion) and 3.1 trillion SKW (US$2.8 billion), down 30 percent or more from Q1 2010's 4.41 trillion SKW (US$4 billion). Dongbu Securities analyst Lee Min-hee cites weakness in LCD sales as the main factor in Samsung's less-than-outstanding first quarter performance, claiming that there has been a weaker demand from TV set and laptop manufacturers, due in part to the rise in tablet popularity. Samsung is to release a complete quarterly report, which will include the performance of its mobile division, later this month.

Recently, methods have become available online to enterprising and impatient WP7 owners that allow them to update their phones to the latest version of WP7 even if their carriers and manufacturers have not officially released it. Microsoft warns against this practice since it has not fully tested the homebrew methods and is not sure what could happen to the phone should something go wrong with the update. The company cautions that a phone's warranty could be voided as well as the phone may not receive future updates automatically if this method is used.

Telus will bring LTE to Canada using AWS bands

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:33 AM PDT

Telus has announced plans to build a 4G LTE network in Canada this year. Expected to be initially built in major metropolitan areas, Telus' network will be using the AWS spectrum that Telus already owns, which operates on the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequencies. The company has stated that the Canadian government will have to allow the carrier to purchase spectrum in the 700MHz range in order to deploy LTE in rural areas. This is much like the situation in the United States where Verizon Wireless and AT&T purchased large blocks of 700MHz spectrum to use for their own LTE networks (though AT&T also hopes to use T-Mobile's AWS spectrum if its acquisition deal is approved). Telus plans to launch its LTE network in 2012.

HTC skips past Nokia in market cap

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:26 AM PDT

HTC has passed Nokia in market capitalization, with valuation now at $33.8 billion compared to Nokia's $32.84 billion. HTC had already surpassed RIM, who is currently valued at $28.5 billion. HTC's market cap has grown leaps and bounds over the past few years; the company is now worth 30 times more than it was 5 years ago. This is due mainly to the success of the Android smartphones it started producing in 2008. The growth doesn't look like it will slow any time soon, with HTC expected to ship 200 million smartphones and 30 million tablets a year for the next three to five years.
