Today ViewSonic officially announced the ViewPad 4, an Android smartphone running on Google's Android 2.2 operating system. The ViewPad 4 offers a 4.1-inch screen and is powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz MSM8255 processor.

AT&T Apple iPhone 3GS at Best Buy for $50 tomorrow

Best Buy Mobile has announced it will offer Apple's 3GS iPhone for 49.99, with a new two-year service agreement or qualifying upgrade, on AT&T Wireless starting on Friday, January 7. AT&T announced earlier in the day that it would start offering the iPhone 3GS for $49, starting tomorrow.

HTC Inspire Android 2.2 smartphone headed to Telus Canada

The recently announced HTC Inspire 4G, an Android 2.2 Froyo powered smartphone, appears to be heading to Telus in Canada according to what HTC let slip to PocketNow.com. The Inspire 4G has a 4.3-inch display and an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording. It's expected to make its debut in the U.S. during the second quarter of this year with AT&T. No word on pricing or availability has been announced for Telus.

Dell Venue Android smartphone launched - unlocked

Dell has launched the second member of its Venue line of smartphones. This one, called simply the Venue, runs the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system system instead of the Windows Phone 7 OS found on the Venue Pro. The Venus also lacks the Pro's keyboard.

Verizon intros Skype Mobile with Video for 4G handsets

Today at the Verizon Wireless CES press event, Skype CEO Tony Bates announced the unveiling of Skype Mobile with Video on Verizon Wireless handsets. Bates claimed that the new service will be deeply integrated with Verizon 4G handsets that feature both forward and rear facing cameras. The application offers one-touch calling that is optimized for the network and is always-on - with no need for Wi-Fi. No word yet as to when the application will be available for use by Verizon customers.

Verizon lays out LTE plans; 140 markets added in 2011, national coverage in 36mo

Today during its CES press event, Verizon Wireless announced that it plans to have the nation covered with 4G LTE within 36 months. In half that time, Verizon expects to cover 200 million users with the new network, twice what it has today. This year, alone, Verizon plans to add over 140 new 4G LTE markets, bringing the total to over 175 by the end of 2011.

Video: Motorola XOOM Android tablet for Verizon video

We met up with Motorola during the Consumer Electronics Show to check out the XOOM, an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet that will launch on Verizon Wireless. The XOOM features a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, a dual-core processor, and will include support for Verizon's 4G LTE network after an upgrade in the second quarter of the year.

T-Mobile to offer 25 4G devices, more data plans in 2011

Today at CES in Las Vegas, T-Mobile CEO and President Philipp Humm spoke of the company's 4G mobile lineup and expansion. T-Mobile plans on offering at least 25 new 4G devices this year, starting with the newly announced Dell Streak 7 that will be available in the coming weeks. The Streak 7 supports HSPA+ 21Mbps data, while devices available in the second half of the year will support HSPA+ 42Mbps data. T-Mobile claims that its HSPA+ network currently covers over 200 million users in the U.S., making it by far the largest "4G" network in the country. T-Mobile USA also stated that it will offer more compelling data plans in the new year as well.

Google tech denies dual-core CPU requirement for Android 3.0 Honeycomb

One of Google's lead people on the Android OS platform, Dan Morrill, has said on his Twitter account that there is, in fact, no dual-core processor requirement for devices running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, as had been speculated earlier. He would know, he said, and as the tech lead for Android Open Source and Compatibility, we tend to think he's right.

It appears that Sony Ericsson's new Xperia arc Android powered smartphone could be running Android version 2.4, not the 2.3 version of Gingerbread that we were epxecting, based upon photos snapped of the device. Dutch site Tweakers.net claims to have handled the phone and noted some UI changes as well as a few new hooks for video chatting, including possible support for the same Google Talk video chat that is highlighted in Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets.

AT&T drops Apple iPhone 3GS price to $49

Today AT&T announced that it was cutting the price of the Apple iPhone 3GS to $49. The $49 Apple iPhone 3GS will be available starting tomorrow to eligible upgrading customers as well as new customers at AT&T retail locations and AT&T's website. The phone requires, at minimum, AT&T's $15 per month limited data plan and a monthly voice plan of $39.99 or higher. AT&T's pricing change could be interpreted as a preemptive move against a coming Verizon iPhone, or merely an attempt by AT&T and Apple to reduce existing stock before the launch of a new device.
