Google Play Gift Cards available at GameStop, Target, and RadioShack

Consumers will soon be able to use Google Play Gift Cards to purchase apps, music, books, and other content from the Google Play Store. Google has announced that it will sell gift cards in $10, $25, and $50 increments, allowing users to purchase content for others, or themselves, without needing a debit or credit card.

Boingo Wireless provides WiFi hotspots at locations across the U.S. A few of those access points will offer free or discounted service thanks to Google. Boingo announced today that Google Offers will sponsor 24 more malls and airports, raising its total of sponsored hotspots to more than 250 locations.

Skype iPhone & iPad add photos sharing and battery improvements

Skype has unveiled a new feature for its iPhone and iPad apps that allows users to share photos with others. The photos are posted in a standard messaging window, and users can send any image captured by an iPhone or iPad because there are no file size limits. That of course makes Skype an attractive alternative to MMS. The app is more appealing now because Skype also improved performance. The company says its apps use less battery when running in the background, so users should be more comfortable staying logged-in all day. Skype requires an iPhone 3G or later, a 2nd or 3rd generation iPod touch, or any iPad. Download Skype for iPhone or iPad.

Sony updates 2011 Xperia phones with new version of Android 4.0

Sony is pushing a software update to its 2011 Xperia Android phones that are compatible with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new Android 4.0 ROM addresses some software bugs that created problems in previous ICS builds, and it adds "performance tweaks" to improve the experience. Sony says the update should appear this week for the Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V, Xperia mini, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Xperia ray. The Xperia mini pro, Xperia neo L and Live with Walkman should receive the update next week.

Ofcom approves Everything Everywhere to deliver 4G ahead of competitors

British telecommunications regulator Ofcom has approved Everything Everywhere's request to launch 4G in the UK this year. Despite complaints from rival networks that the decision would give Everything Everywhere an unfair advantage, Ofcom has authorized the joint venture by Orange and T-Mobile to use its 1800 MHz spectrum to deploy LTE or WiMAX beginning September 11.
