Google, PayPal, and U.S. carriers join committee to increase mobile payment adoption

The Electronic Transactions Association announced that it has formed The Mobile Payments Committee, an alliance of companies involved in the mobile payments sector working to achieve their common goals. Though members have competing platforms, some in testing and others already used by consumers, the committee was formed to bolster mobile payments.

Vringo and Nokia complete patent purchase agreement

Vringo, a company known mostly for video ringtone apps and its recent patent litigation with AOL, has completed a Patent Purchase Agreement with Nokia. Vringo announced today that it will purchase 500 patents and patent applications from Nokia in exchange for an undisclosed cash payment and future revenues associated with the intellectual property. The patents relate to various wireless network technologies, and 31 of 124 patent families are standard essential patents that Vringo will have to license to other companies.

RIM escapes $147 million dollar penalty in BlackBerry patent case

A California judge has vacated a jury verdict against RIM that would have required the company to pay $147 million for patent infringement. A jury last month found that RIM infringed on patents held by Mformation Technologies, which valued royalties at a rate of $8 per device sold from 2008 to 2012. However, District Chief Judge James Ware ruled that RIM did not violate the patents, which relate to remote management of mobile devices. Judge Ware's ruling vacates the jury verdict and frees RIM from having to pay the penalty.

T-Mobile loses 205k customers in Q2 2012, pins hopes on LTE for rebound
