Cricket Wireless lands at Kmart stores nationwide

Cricket Wireless is expanding its retail presence and will now be offered at over 1,200 Kmarts nationwide. Cricket's prepaid smartphones and feature phones will be available for customers without a long-term contract commitment. Four handsets will be available at Kmart initially: the Samsung Vitality and the ZTE Score smartphones, and the Samsung Chrono and the Huawei Pillar feature phones.

Apple iTunes 10.6.3 now available

Hot on the heels of yesterday's press event, Apple has released a new update for its media manager, iTunes, which brings it to revision 10.6.3. The update is available directly from Apple's website and allows developers to install the beta version of iOS 6 announced yesterday. Unfortunately the general public will need to wait until the fall to get their hands on the the new version of iOS.

Android 4.0 ICS update for T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy S II available at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT tonight

At the beginning of this month, T-Mobile announced that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Galaxy S II would be coming today, June 11. Now, the carrier has updated its support documentation to reveal that the update will be available to users at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT this evening. The Android 4.0 upgrade will not be available as an over-the-air update, so users will need to use the Samsung Kies desktop application on a computer to update their phones. T-Mobile notes that the update will reset the phone's homescreen layout, but user data should remain intact. The update includes the full Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, Samsung's TouchWiz interface, Wi-Fi calling improvements, and voicemail enhancements.

T-Mobile offering all of its 4G smartphones for free this weekend

T-Mobile announced the details of its Father's Day sale this afternoon, which will occur this Friday and Saturday, June 15 and 16. The carrier will be offering all of its 4G smartphones for free to those that qualify for a new two-year agreement. Additionally, customers will be able to pick up a T-Mobile Springboard with Google tablet for free after rebate with a qualifying service plan agreement. The sale will be held at all of T-Mobile's retail stores across the country.

Apple launches new Smart Case for the iPad

Hidden among the chaos of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote and announcement of iOS 6, the company also started selling a new Smart Case accessory for the iPad today. The Smart Case is similar to the Smart Cover introduced with the iPad 2, but it also includes a polyurethane back that snaps in place over the iPad itself.

Apple iOS running on over 365 million devices

At the 2012 edition of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, more commonly known as WWDC, Apple revealed that it had sold over 365 million iOS powered smartphones, tablets, and media players as of the end of March, 2012. Beyond that, Apple also revealed that over 75 percent of all the devices out there are now running iOS 5, a statistic that seems to be an obvious jab at Google's Android OS, which tends to leave older devices behind when new versions of Android are released. Nearly three quarters of Android devices in use today are still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which was first announced two years ago.

Apple announces 650,000 apps in the iTunes App Store, 225,000 for the iPad

During the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference keynote speech, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the iTunes App Store is now home to 650,000 apps. There are 225,000 apps specifically for the iPad tablet, and customers have downloaded over 30 billion apps from the store to date. All of those app downloads have contributed to the $5 billion that Apple claims to have paid developers so far. The App Store now operates in 152 countries around the world, 32 of which were recently added.

Sprint's ownership in Clearwire falls below 50 percent

Sprint revealed today that it no longer owns a majority stake in Clearwire. Sprint had once owned as much as 54 percent of the company, though now its holdings are less than 50 percent. The reduction in ownership will allow Sprint to reclaim the voting rights it gave up last year to reduce liabilities. Sprint's ownership in Clearwire declined due to Clearwire's recent issue of new equity.

LG Optimus 4X HD quad-core smartphone arrives in Europe

LG has announced that the Optimus 4X HD, the company's first smartphone with a quad-core processor, is now available for purchase in Germany, with availability in other European countries coming soon. The Optimus 4X HD was originally announced at Mobile World Congress in February, and features NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor, a 4.7-inch 720p display, an 8 megapixel camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with LG's custom user interface. LG plans to launch in the phone in Asia, Russia, Central America, and South America in the coming weeks, as well. A North American launch has not yet been announced.

Samsung says Nokia buyout rumors are untrue

Samsung has commented on recent reports that the Korean company has plans to purchase Finnish phone maker Nokia, stating that the rumors are "purely speculative and are not true." The rumors recently sent Nokia's shares up a few percentage points, but after Samsung's denial, Nokia's stock fell back down two percent. According to multiple market reports, Samsung recently surpassed Nokia to become the largest phone manufacturer in the world.
