Facebook launches App Center to help users discover mobile apps

Last night, Facebook launched its App Center, a portal for users to find new apps for their mobile devices. App Center can be accessed from the web or through the iOS or Android Facebook apps, and supports HTML5 webapps as well as native apps.

Facebook beefs up security features in its mobile apps

There has been a lot of talk about login security this week, with news that hackers have stolen over 6.5 million of LinkedIn's passwords and Last.fm announcing a similar breach of its own. Facebook seems to be capitalizing on the news, as it has just announced two new features for its mobile apps that are designed to enhance login and browsing security while on the go.

Judge tosses Apple, Motorola trial out of court before it even starts

Bloomberg is reporting that a federal judge has canceled the upcoming patent infringement trial between Apple and Motorola Mobility before its schedule start at the beginning of next week. In the suit, Apple had brought four patent infringement claims against Motorola, and Motorola replied with one claim against Apple. The judge dismissed the case after rejecting the damage arguments held by both sides. The case was scheduled to begin on June 11 in Chicago.

Samsung to spend billions to produce 14nm smartphone processors

Samsung announced that it plans to invest $1.9 billion to build a new smartphone processor manufacturing line. The processors that Samsung will be able to build with the new line will be constructed with 20nm and 14nm processes, which promise to produce faster, more energy-efficient chips. Samsung's current Exynos 4 Quad processor is made with 35nm manufacturing processes, while Qualcomm's uses 28nm processes to make its Snapdragon S4. Samsung hopes to complete the new manufacturing line by the end of next year.

Facebook launches carrier billing for Facebook Credit purchases

This week, Facebook announced that it is now possible to bill Facebook Credit purchases from mobile devices directly to a monthly wireless statement, negating the need for users to enter in credit card information or go through cumbersome verification systems. Facebook Credits are a form of digital currency that users can spend within apps on Facebook to purchase new items or unlock hidden features. The new carrier billing option is available for all of the major carriers in the U.S. (except Verizon Wireless) and the UK, as well as other carriers across the world.

HTC One X for AT&T gets over-the-air update to fix bugs, improve Wi-Fi performance

AT&T has released a software update for the HTC One X smartphone that improves Wi-Fi connectivity and fixes other bugs. The carrier says that Wi-Fi connectivity and throughput are improved with the update, and contact syncing in the AT&T Address Book app has been fixed. Users can download the 65MB update now by going to the Software Updates section in the Settings app.

Samsung brings ChatON app to Windows Phone smartphones

Samsung has now released its cross-platform chat service ChatON on the Windows Phone platform, making it available on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, bada, and now Windows Phone. The app lets users send and receive picture and text messages over Samsung's ChatON network, and includes features like group chats and animated messages. ChatON is free and available for Samsung Windows Phone devices in the Windows Phone Marketplace now.

RIM cans 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook, remains committed to tablets

RIM has confirmed that it will no longer sell the 16GB version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. In a statement provided to Engadget, the company said "RIM will no longer be making the 16 GB model of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The 16 GB PlayBook will continue to be available for distributors and retailers while quantities last. We continue to remain committed to the tablet space and the 32 GB and 64 GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook continue to be available from our distributors and retailers around the world. There is more value for our customers in the higher capacity models (32 GB, 64 GB), and as such we have decided to focus our efforts here." RIM has not had an easy time with tablets thus far, and it only really had any success selling the PlayBook when it cut prices by as much as $300 last year. The company did reveal that a 4G version of the tablet would be hitting shelves at some point later this year.

Samsung vows to fight Apple's attempt to ban the Galaxy S III in the U.S.

Sprint confirms that Apple iPhone headed to Virgin Mobile, coming June 29

This morning, Sprint confirmed earlier reports that its pre-paid Virgin Mobile brand would be getting the Apple iPhone in the near future. Virgin will launch the iPhone on June 29, and will offer it with plans as low as $30 per month.

HTC reaffirms that its devices do not infringe upon Apple's patents

Yesterday, it was revealed that Apple has filed another complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission stating that 29 of HTC's smartphones and tablets are still in violation of a ruling made by the ITC back in December. Apple is asking the ITC to block the import of the devices into the country, but HTC maintains that its devices are not violating the ruling.
