Video: Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY (Verizon) video tour - part 1 of 2

Sony Ericsson's Xperia PLAY is the first PlayStation certified mobile phone to hit the market. This means that it will have access to a host of gaming titles, including ports of older PlayStation games. The version for Verizon Wireless has Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread (not 2.3.4, so no video chat in Google Talk) without any customizations as found on the European version. More importantly, it features a slide-out gaming pad, complete with two touch-sensitive pads to simulate analog sticks. The PLAY is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and has an Adreno 205 graphics chip.

Android users like apps, when they are free

A new study on the Android Market reveals that there are 72,000 paid apps in the store, compared to the 211,000 paid apps in Apple's iTunes App Store. The interesting part of the study though, is how many apps are actually selling in Google's Android Market.

Microsoft working to bring tethering to Windows Phone

One of the features of the older Windows Mobile operating system that did not make it over to the new Windows Phone platform is tethering, despite it being a popular feature among users of the platform. The new update to Windows Phone, dubbed "Mango", will not have tethering either, though Microsoft has said that it is working to bring the feature to the OS in the future.

Nokia, CNN form partnership for use of Nokia Maps

Nokia and CNN have announced a new, formal partnership in which the mobile phone make will provide mapping services to the international news conglomerate. In return, CNN will provide an app for Nokia's smartphone platforms that will give users access to news and video reports, and the ability to submit their own news stories.

Samsung Galaxy S II outsells iPhone 4 in UK during May

According to uSwitch, a company that ranks mobile phones based on sales data and live searches in the UK, Samsung's Galaxy S II was more popular than Apple's iPhone 4 during the month of May. The top slot had been held by the new phones from HTC for a number of months, but Apple claimed it in April. Apparently Samsung's dual-core flagship was too good for UK buyers to resist, and it stole the top slot from Apple in May. This sounds like more good news for Samsung, as it was previously reported that its line of Galaxy S phones were more popular than the iPhone in Japan as well.

Microsoft wants higher-priced apps for Windows Phone

Microsoft has plans to encourage higher-quality, and higher-priced, apps for its Windows Phone platform. Instead of pushing free, or 99 cent apps that are common in other app stores, Microsoft is encouraging developers to produce a better product, and then charge more for it. "I'd rather developers sell fewer than a million downloads and get to a million dollars," said Brandon Watson, director of an apps developer program for Microsoft. "If we can support a higher price point that's good for developers."

T-Mobile G2x will to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread by summer

According to a tweet from T-Mobile USA's official Twitter account, the T-Mobile G2x dual-core smartphone will be getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by summer. Its not a huge surprise, as we have wholly expected that the G2x would eventually receive an update to 2.3 Gingerbread, but this is the closest thing to a time-frame that we have heard yet. Let's just hope T-Mobile and LG go all out and release version 2.3.4 when Gingerbread arrives, so that users can make good use of the front-facing camera for Google Talk video chat.
