Despite major growth by other platforms such as Android, Apple's iTunes App Store is still the king of the hill for revenues from app purchases. Google's Android Market may have the most free apps available, but when it comes to making money, developers should still be looking at the App Store with serious consideration.

LTE subscriber count could hit 16 million in 2011

A new report by ABI Research says that worldwide subscribers of LTE 4G service could number as high as 16 million by the end of this year. LTE networks are being deployed in 12 countries, including the U.S. and Canada. ABI Research claims that new plans designed to replace landline based home internet will drive the number of subscribers up.

Nokia releases Qt SDK 1.1 into the wild

Nokia has released the final version of the Qt SDK 1.1, graduating it out of beta status. The Qt SDK 1.1 allows developers to create apps for the Symbian, Maemo, and MeeGo platforms, as well as desktop computers. One of the highlight features is the new toolset that makes easy conversions of apps for different devices. Also included is the new Qt Quick component that uses the QML language. Developers can download the new SDK at Nokia's Developer Forum.

Clearwire's Rover: send new plans on over!

Clearwire has confirmed its plans to discontinue its Rover pre-paid mobile broadband service. Back in 2010, Clearwire first brought Rover into the mix as an alternative to post-paid mobile broadband plans. The Rover service offered pre-paid services in daily, weekly, and monthly options, starting at $5. "The personal hot spot category of products enable hundreds of Wi-Fi enabled products to access the Clearwire 4G network," said Susan Johnston, Clearwire spokeswoman in a statement to Fierce Wireless. "Rover provided us with the ability to test some new pay-as-you-go pricing options and was offered on a limited retail basis in a couple markets." There you have it, folks, and straight from the horses mouth. Despite the death of Rover, Clearwire intends to bring to market new pre-paid options that "should meet the needs of most of the Rover customer base."

Garmin launches geocaching Android app: Garmin OpenCaching

Garmin recently released a new Android application called Garmin OpenCaching, which was created to help GPS users find and use geocaches on Android-powered smartphones. Basically, the application draws in data from www.opencaching.com, which is an open-source collection of geographic data generated by users. The application is available now for free in the Android Market.

Apple releases iOS 4.3.3 with location data modifications

Apple just released an update to iOS 4.3.3 for all iOS devices, available now on iTunes. The biggest modifications that come along with this update are related to the now-infamous location data collection that has been present since iOS 4.0. With iOS 4.3.3, your iPhone will make the location data archive much smaller, and will also encrypt the data for safety. Another enhancement of iOS 4.3.3 is that whenever your location services are switched off, the iPhone will delete the cache of information entirely. Other changes include iPod bug fixes and a the amendment of some battery-life issues. It's important to note that this update is for GSM phones only and does not apply to Verizon Wireless' iPhone 4, but an update to iOS 4.2.8 for the Verizon version has similar fixes.

Warner Bros. buys Flixster movie app

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment group has announced the purchase of the popular movie app Flixster. Flixster gives information such as movie times, reviews, previews, and more, directly on a mobile smartphone or tablet. One of the most loved features is the direct Rotten Tomatoes integration. Warner Bros. will be acquiring Rotten Tomatoes (which Flixster has owned since January 2010) as part of the deal and promises that both the Flixster app and Rotten Tomatoes will remain independent. Flixster currently has apps on all the major platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, webOS, Windows Phone, and more.

Bank of America launches mobile banking app for WP7

Today Microsoft announced, via an incredibly brief post on the Windows Mobile Blog, that the Bank of America application has made its way to the Windows Marketplace for U.S. users only. Like many mobile banking apps, the Bank of America application will allow BoA customers to check balances, transfer money, pay bills, and locate ATMs, all via mobile for free.

iTunes rival Spotify launches music download service with iPod sync

Spotify has just launched its music download service in Europe, which will allow users to sync downloaded MP3 playlists to an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle through a USB connection. By visiting the new "Devices" section of the Spotify app on the computer, users will be given a number of device options with which they can sync their playlists. What's more, the Spotify Mobile iOS and Android apps will give users the option to sync playlists wirelessly without a premium subscription. Download prices for non-premium subscribers to Spotify are as follows: 10 tracks cost 9.99 EUR or 1 EUR per track (7.99 GBP or a little under 80p per track); 15 tracks cost 12.99 EUR or .87 EUR per track (9.99 GBP / 67p); 40 tracks cost 30 EUR or .75 EUR per track (25 GBP / 63 p), and 100 tracks will cost 60 EUR or .60 EUR per track (50 GBP / 50p). All new features and device options will launch today.

AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile tweak Isis mobile payments plan

AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA, three of the nation's largest wireless carriers, will not be setting up a separate network for payments and transactions conducted via phones, according to the Wall Street Journal. Two unnamed sources that spoke with the WSJ said setting up a separate network would have been too time consuming and difficult.

Sprint builds opposition plan for AT&T, T-Mobile deal

Sprint Nextel, perhaps the foremost opponent of the proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA by AT&T, has asked West Virginia's state regulators to review the deal between the second and fourth place carriers. According to The Wall Street Journal's report, Sprint intends to do the same in other states, as well. The merger, if approved, would launch AT&T to the first place spot ahead of Verizon in the U.S. wireless size rankings. Sprint has claimed in multiple venues and through various channels that the proposed deal would hurt competition within the industry and slow down innovation.

The phone itself is very impressive, and it features a number of new user interface updates that bring LG's UI closer to what HTC has done with Sense.

HTC Desire HD, Incredible S getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now

Italian users of the HTC Incredible S smartphone got an early peek of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, but it appears now that HTC has released it for all regions that have the phone. The Desire HD is receiving the update as well. Users should get a notification on their handset that the update is ready, and they can then proceed to download it. HTC recommends a backup of the data on the handset and connection to a Wi-Fi network before downloading. The Desire Z and original Desire are anticipated to get the update by the end of June.

Vodafone, Three UK to launch BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone

RIM took the opportunity at the BlackBerry World Conference to unveil the latest smartphone in its BlackBerry Bold Series: the BlackBerry Bold 9900. In addition to T-Mobile USA's previous announcement that it will carry the 9900, Pocket-Lint reports that Vodafone and Three UK will launch the device as well. The Bold 9900 will be the first device from RIM to feature the new BlackBerry 7 OS, and will also be the fastest BlackBerry smartphone with a 1.2 GHz processor. But these aren't the only firsts that the Bold 9900 brings with it, as this will be the thinnest device from RIM, and will also be the first BlackBerry to feature NFC capabilities. T-Mobile has mentioned that the launch date will be later this year, so we assume Vodafone and Three UK will follow suit, but we'll let you know if we hear otherwise. As we originally promised, Vodafone UK has officially announced the start of pre-orders for the highly-anticipated HTC Sensation Android smartphone, delivering the handset before any other UK operator. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered smartphone delivers high-speed connectivity via Vodafone's network, and sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. The HTC Sensation is also the first phone from HTC to sport the newest version of the Sense UI, along with HTC Watch, a movie-viewing application that comes pre-loaded on the device. The HTC Sensation smartphone is available from Vodafone for free for anyone choosing Vodafone's 35 GBP/month, 40 GBP/month, or 55 GBP/month plans. Three UK today announced on its blog that the Samsung Galaxy S II is now available from the carrier. The Samsung Galaxy S II is one of the hottest phones on the market right now, running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and touting a dual-core core processor and a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen. The smartphone also sports an 8 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, along with a 2 megapixel front facing camera.
