Motorola to update DROID 2, X, Pro with Android Gingerbread 2.3

Via its official support forum, Motorola has said it will update its DROID 2, DROID 2 Global, DROID X, and DROID Pro smartphones with Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system in the coming months, specifically Q2 for the DROID X and Q3 for the rest of the DROID handsets. No word was given on whether it would update the original DROID/MILESTONE.

Dual-SIM accepting Nokia C2-00 phone to finally start shipping this quarter

Alongside of today's announcement from Nokia introducing the new dual-SIM X1-01, the company also said its C2-00 phone would start shipping this quarter. The C2-00 is also a hot swappable dual-SIM device and sports a very similar spec list to the X1-01, but is bit more expensive at 45 EUR and comes with an S40 user interface, a VGA camera for photos, a built-in web browser, and Nokia Messaging. The C2-00 will start shipping in select markets this quarter according to Nokia.

Today Sony Ericsson announced that it has hired Nokia veteran Tommi Laine-Ylijoki to be its new Corporate Vice President and Head of Operations. Laine-Ylijoki worked at Nokia for more than 17 years, and was most recently the company's Vice President of Materials Management.

Windows Mobile 6.5 closed to new apps starting July 15

With the focus on Windows Phone and its upcoming "Mango" update, this comes as no surprise, but Microsoft has announced that no new apps will be added to Windows Mobile Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.5 starting July 15. Microsoft says that current apps will still be available for sale and the store is not closing down entirely, but no new apps will be added after that date. It is unknown whether developers will be able to push out updates for existing apps or not, but Microsoft says more information regarding the Windows Mobile 6.5 situation will be available in the coming months.

The HTC Flyer is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread tablet that features a 7-inch touchscreen and a tablet-friendly version of the HTC Sense 3.0 user interface. It is compatible with a special Scribe pen for taking notes, and features a single-core 1.5GHz processor as well as dual cameras and a Adobe Flash capable browser.

T-Mobile's Bobsled Facebook VoIP calling service back online

T-Mobile has reinstated its Bobsled calling service for Facebook users. It recently suspended service due to design issues, which seem to have been resolved. Bobsled is a free VoIP service that lets Facebook users make voice calls to their friends from their computers.

Leap speaks out against AT&T, T-Mobile merger

Joining Sprint and MetroPCS in opposing the buyout of T-Mobile USA by AT&T is Leap Wireless. The carrier claimed that if the merger were to go through, it would contribute to a pattern of concentration in the wireless industry around the two largest carriers, AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Leap was not present at the Senate hearing regarding the merger last month.

Google to launch mobile payments with Sprint on Thursday

According to Bloomberg, Google is set to launch its mobile payment system with Sprint at an event in New York on Thursday. The invitation for the event offers no confirmation of any possible mobile payment-related theme, but we will be attending the event in any case to learn what Google has up its sleeve. According to Bloomberg,the new service will launch with the Google Nexus S 4G on Sprint, an NFC-capable Andoid 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone.

Video: Microsoft Windows Phone "Mango" multitasking video demo

Microsoft gave us a quick demo of the new multitasking features that Windows Phone will get with the "Mango" update that is due to arrive later this fall. The OS uses a combination of freezing apps and interval polling to achieve multitasking. It will intelligently manage the phone's memory and kill apps when necessary.

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 beta with Aurora features available for Android

The first "rapid release" of Mozilla Firefox 5.0 for the desktop and the Android mobile platform has been made available. It includes support for the new CSS Animation standard and features the new Firefox Channel Switcher. The Firefox Channel Switcher lets users switch to a Mozilla rapid development mode in the app, which provides access to new, potentially unstable features in the browser without having to install a completely separate application. The application can be downloaded from the Android Market.

One of the new features to come with the Windows Phone "Mango" update is Bing Vision search, which will allow users to take pictures of items, bar codes, QR codes, and more and get search results from those images. The new app linking feature will direct users to apps that are relevant to their search.

Dell missing from list of Windows Phone partners

Conspicuously missing from the list of Windows Phone hardware partners that will support or come out with new phones for the "Mango" update was Dell. Dell was originally a featured partner when Windows Phone was launched last fall, but it had a lot of trouble bringing its Venue Pro smartphone to market. The Venue Pro was plagued with issues when it eventually became available, as well. It is not known whether Microsoft or Dell ended the agreement between the two companies, but it might be safe to assume that we won't see any new Dell Windows Phone smartphones going forward.

Nokia Windows Phone smartphones will ship with "Mango" update

Microsoft confirmed today at the Windows Phone "Mango" update preview event that Nokia phones with Windows Phone will hit the market with the "Mango" update in tow. Though Microsoft did not give a date as to when we will see the Nokia devices, the "Mango" version of Windows Phone will not be available until the fall, so we don't expect to see any Nokia Windows Phone smartphones before then. The company did confirm that there are working prototypes in the lab right now, though.

Apple iTunes App Store passes 500,000 application mark

It appears that Apple's iTunes App Store has finally surpassed the half million mark in number of approved apps that are available to consumers. An interesting graphic posted on Facebook shows a number of highlights in the life of the App Store, including the fact that the Angry Birds game spent the most days in the number 1 spot for paid apps: 275 in total. The infographic also highlights some milestones hit by the App Store, posts a few projections, and provides information on average app prices.

Today at a press event in New York City, Microsoft announced that there are now 17,000 applications currently available from its Windows Phone Marketplace, the app store that supports the company's Windows Phone 7 smartphone OS. Twitter buys TweetDeck

According to the BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones, the BBC has confirmed that micro-blogging service Twitter has purchased TweetDeck, the company that makes the popular Twitter and Facebook client of the same name. Twitter has, of late, been taking the stance that third party Twitter apps are a bad thing, and has been either making life difficult for them, or buying them.

Motorola ATRIX 4G update borks certain banking apps

The recent update that was released for the Motorola ATRIX 4G smartphone on AT&T (the one that actually enabled HSUPA data) has had some ill consequences for those who use banking apps on the phone. Apparently, Motorola added new SSL certificates with the update, breaking the banking apps that rely on them for secure connections. The American Express, Bank of America, Chase, and Discover apps are all broken, but the Wells Fargo and Citibank apps are just fine. Motorola suggests users utilize the web browser for their banking needs until a fix is sorted out.
